Where Can You Get a Bump in the Polls for Not Being an Asshole and Lying Like There's No Tomorrow?

Posted by on Mon, Oct 22, 2012 at 8:59 AM

Certainly not the US:

Julia Gillard's approval rating has risen significantly in the first public opinion survey since the Australian prime minister branded her conservative opponent, Tony Abbott, a sexist and misogynist.

The Herald/Nielson poll, carried out a week after Gillard's landmark speech to parliament, showed her personal standing among men and women improved by five points to 47%. It also showed her disapproval rating among men fell five points (three points with women) to 48%.

"That's a big jump," said John Stirton, director of polling at Nielsen...

If she quit opposing gay marriage she might get another bump. Hope we get to see that.

She's an anti-gay BIGOT.
So she definitely qualifies for being an ASSHOLE!

Maybe I'm completely off base, but whenever I've seen her asked about gay marriage, she simply seems to parrot the party line without saying what her personal beliefs are. She is in a parliamentary system, so I can kind of respect that, but I can be talked out of that if I'm being dense.

@3, she's been going not with but against her own Labor Party's platform on gay marriage. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/dec…

Fucking asshole. Not everybody who's anti-gay is a BIGOT. Mostly, we just think you're weird motherfuckers. And even you have to admit that you are.

@4 Interesting. Thanks. I guess the clips I saw were prior to the Labor Party reversal. I watched a bunch of clips of her on youtube after her fiery misogyny speech.

@1 I wonder if a woman like Julia Gillard would get an endorsement on Slog. Really Liberal, fights for woman's rights and is an admitted atheist. But she opposes gay marriage, so would that mean an automatic no?

"Not everybody who's anti-gay is a bigot"? That dog won't hunt. And don't get me started on the "weird" thing - equality under law makes all sorts of people behave less erratically, no? Plus you are a GIANT WEIRDO yourself, you gun-toting, BlackBerry packing, chainsmoking elderly-for-a-Slog-regular.

@5 Remember, before you say something about gays, you should see if it passes the bigot test.

"Not everyone who is anti-gay is a bigot"

Now replace "gay" with another genetic factor like "black"

"Not everyone who is anti-black people is a bigot"

Makes you feel a bit ookey, right? You wouldn't actually say that in public.

So, yes, it does make you a bigot.

@5: To me, bigotry isn't just something people in white sheets who burn crosses engage in. There's more subtle forms of bigotry, which are engaged in by basically decent people. One example of that is someone who thinks gay people shouldn't be allowed to marry because she or he think they're odd.

Fifty Two Eighty, we all think you're weird, and we let you get married. If we didn't let anyone who someone thought was weird get married, then no one (and I mean NO ONE) would be getting married. You DO NOT have the right to deny someone the right to marry just because you, the bigot, think that person is weird.

This is just fucking depressing that it is all the bigots like you that is keeping other bigots, like Rob McKenna, Kim Wyman, and James Watkins, even in the polls.
