Anti-Mitt Romney Protest of the Week

Posted by on Sat, Oct 20, 2012 at 11:53 AM

Common Dreams writes:

Angry workers from Sensata and other Bain-owned companies unfurled a 40-foot anti-Romney banner at his campaign headquarters in Boston, and then protested the Romney/Bain model at Bain Capital’s nearby headquarters as part of a 14-state Bain Worker Bus Tour.

Romney's got that kind of whitebread, Bob Dobbs-style face that looks good on liberal protest signs. You look at Romney's face in black-and-white, you know that people are there to protest out-of-control businesses.

This breaks my heart. I'm from Freeport. I worked at that plant before that division was sold to Sensata. I know Mary Jo and Dot and others who are losing their jobs. More than that, I know that Freeport can't survive continued job losses. The country as a whole may have 7.8% unemployment, or whatever number has been calculated or cooked most recently; Freeport currently has an unemployment rate of 12.6%. And 12.6% is a significant improvement in a community that has endured unemployment levels of greater than 15%.

And these 'well paying jobs' typically pay around $12-$14/hour, after the employee has achieved a solid 20 years tenure. That's the best these people have to aspire to. The whole situation is tragic.

@1 - Sensata isn't some struggling company trying to stay competitive, they are a profitable company that Bain has suggested would become even more profitable by moving these jobs to China. Part of what's hurt them is globalization in general (if not Bain, it may have been someone else making similar recommendations), but it's exactly this sort of thing that is Romney's milieu.
