Obama's Pension

Posted by on Fri, Oct 19, 2012 at 6:00 AM

CNBC says that while Mitt Romney is definitely going to have the cushier retirement, President Obama's pension—subject of that memorable exchange at the debate—is pretty sweet:

From the standpoint of a public pension, Obama is well-heeled.

As president, he will receive $191,300 annually for life — win or lose in next month's election — and receives a travel allotment as well as mailing privileges. Should Obama lose, his presidential pension kicks in immediately after leaving office...

In addition, Obama may be due a nice pension for the eight years he served in the Illinois Legislature as a state senator.

Illinois is infamous for its lavish pension plan for former lawmakers.

Mailing privileges! (Also, it turns out Obama's Illinois pension plan—which the president definitely doesn't manage—can, in fact, be connected to both the Cayman Islands and China.)

True, Obama is set for life-

A prime seat at the public trough. for life.

So, of course he doesn't look at his pension everyday.

Unlike most working slobs in the country
who DON'T have a prime seat at the public trough for life,
and who sweat their pension.....

Of course,

union government employees
also have pretty sweet life long seats at the public trough.

but not the mailing privileges.

life is hard.....

Hey, Troll! Remember when good union wages helped build a strong middle class in America? A middle class that Wal*Mart style starvation wage jobs has helped wipe out?
Remember that, troll?

Troll dear, I know it's hard for you to grasp concepts, but the President is not a union employee.

No wonder you couldn't get that job with the parks department. But still, there's no need to be bitter. I'm sure you contribute much to the workplace, in your own special way.

As for the Caymans and China, EVERYONE's retirement plan is connected to those places in one way or another.

Well, President has got to be a tough job. I don't begrudge any formers their pension -- not even that half-ass, W.

The President's didn't have a pension until congress decided to give them one in the 1950's. After leaving the White House in 1953 Harry and Bess Truman were not well off and frankly were struggling to get by.

As part of the capitalism vs. godless communism propaganda of the age it was decided that this didn't make the United States look good in the eyes of the world so they took a socialist approach and decided to provide a decent pension for former Presidents. And I am not sure but at this point I think they could accept a limited amount of Secret Service protection as well. Though that may have come about later on.

@5 "the President is not a union employee"

It'd be awesome if Carter, Clinton and the Bush's did form an ex-president's trade union.

I think the best part would be if they felt compelled to go on strike.

"Mr. President?"
"Heh. Call me Gov-er-ner. I'm on strike. Heh. Heh."

$191k is chump change for guys like Mitt Romney. He lost more than that on last night's Seahawks game when Jim Harbaugh took those 2 points off the board.

Forty three men have been president. Four of them have been assassinated. That's an assassination rate of over 9%. Nine percent of our presidents were murdered while on the job!

Being president is not only tough, it's a deadly job.

I think a big pension is justified. Call it hazard pay.

Poor, butthurt troll - can't figure out why his minimum-wage graveyard shift job mopping up tweaker vomit at the 7-Eleven doesn't come with a union pension plan...

Poor Troll. Too busy working for China to care about the fact that his Chosen One, Mitt, owns Chinese corporations directly.

Jesus, that's less than a port commissioner. $191,300 ain't bad for the job with, arguably, the greatest amount of responsibility on Earth.

And what #14 said. I wonder if friends and relatives are always like "hey, can you drop this in the mail for me?"
