New Affordable Housing Opens in Central District: After 40 years of neglect, a contaminated lot in the Central District has been transformed into much needed, low-income housing in the Central District, which opens today.

Change Those Fire Alarm Batteries, Plz: The Seattle Fire Department responded to a call in Greenwood last Sunday morning to find a burning duplex and a man dead on the bottom floor. According to the neighborhood blog, PhinneyWood, the bottom floor didn't have a working smoke detector and the battery had been taken out of the upper floor detector.

Central District Middle Schools Reopening: Central District News reports that Seattle Public Schools plans to reopen Meany Middle School by 2017 and move NOVA back into the renovated Horace Mann building (on 24th and Cherry) by 2014. Parents, mark this day on your calendars to reference during the next round of school closures.

West Seattle School Outlaws Fun: West Seattle Blog reports that Lafayette Elementary will not allow students to dress up in Halloween costumes on Wednesday the 31st, because the costumes make students "distracted."

Do You Want a Contractor to Build You a "Rain Garden" for Free? The city gives out free money to people who landscape their yards in ways that optimally collect and filter contaminated stormwater (thereby keeping it out of Lake Washington). They're called rain gardens. The neighborhood of Laurelhurst recently completed its first "Rain Garden" project and there's a Seattle contractor who's willing to inspect and landscape a rain garden for you, for free, reports the Laurelhurst Blog.

Like Laurelhurst people need the city to pay for their gardens.

Kent Soroptimists Need Mittens!

The Soroptimist International of Kent is once again partnering with various community groups and the Kent School District to collect coats and warm clothing for homeless students and their families as identified by the Kent School District.

There is a special need for new or gently used coats, hats, mittens/gloves and new socks.

Heaven fucking forbid elementary school kids be distracted. They're doing critical work, those elementary school kids. Gotta keep them focused.

Can't have them running around screaming their heads off during recess, that's for sure.

Let's get them into little suits and ties and dresses post haste!

They can't turn costuming into a learning experience? Those teachers need to take in a show. I hear "Wicked" is playing.

Given that most of the costumes for the little girls make them look like little whores I can only guess it's to keep the males teacher's hands off of them

Yes, change out your smoke detector batteries every six months and test them every couple months. Also, if you have children living in your house and are unwilling or unable to keep your smoke detectors working, please call Child Protective Services and ask them to come right over and remove the kids from your custody.

People are always going on and on about a BS "war on Christmas" and no one mentions the war on halloween. Christians bitch and moan about "discrimination" or "insensitivity" but what they really want is their way all the time and screw everyone else. I would pull my kids out of school that day and advise my friends to do the same. While protecting their religious beliefs they're destroying a very precious part of our culture.

and if it has to do with the girls dressing slutty, I would just send them home, that would shame their parents enough to know better next year.
