Circa Is Trying to Remake News: What Do You Think?

Posted by on Mon, Oct 15, 2012 at 4:20 PM

Today, Cheezeburger Network Ben Huh's new news company, Circa, went live in the Apple App Store. What they're trying to do is remake news for the smartphone.Circa's own promotional blog post explains:

Instead of articles, Circa presents news as a collection of details about a story: the facts, stats, quotes, pictures, maps, and more. These are the full stories, not summaries; summaries tend to compress stories and therefore lose details. Instead, each story on Circa has the same details you’d find in traditional articles, but broken down into individual chunks of information that are much easier to consume. It’s the facts, without the fluff.

You flip through the story on a series of notecards, each of which pretty much only contains one fact at a time. And you can decide to follow a story if it interests you. The Verge and TechCrunch both covered the Circa launch this morning. Go read those stories, check out the Circa video, and then tell me what you think.

This post had too many words! Can someone give me a 4 word summary please! And maybe post a picture of a puppy or something while you're at it. This sounds boring.

Why fix what isn't broke? Unless Slog breaks. Then fix it!

Are they planning on paying their employees decent wages, or is Huh still a terrible Randroid, bragging about how underpaying his grunts makes them "more loyal"?

I prefer well written summaries myself. The SLOG morning news.

I encourage people on Twitter to drop the hashtags and links and use it for what it was intended for...delivering information in 140 characters.

One or two sentences, then I decide to read more, or go on to the next thing.

Is reading too difficult now, all of a sudden?

They're not reinventing anything. Just another "aggregator" trying to piggyback on the work of news-gathering organizations and offering nothing in return. Screw 'em.

Ben Huh is not very good at running a company, but he knows how to get investor's money, that's for sure.
