The Economy Keeps Giving Obama Good News

Posted by on Fri, Oct 12, 2012 at 7:42 AM

NYT...

U.S. consumer sentiment unexpectedly rose to its highest level in five years in October as consumers became more optimistic about the overall economy in a possible boost to President Obama's reelection hopes next month.

The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's preliminary October reading on the overall index on consumer sentiment came in at 83.1, up from 78.3 the month before, and the highest since September 2007, the survey showed on Friday.

It is strange to find that of all things it is the economy that's preventing Obama's reelection bid from falling into the massive hole that opened last week and seemingly refuses to close.

We'll see just how long that consumer sentiment lasts when sequestration and the Bush tax rates expire on Jan. 1.

Well, when the payroll taxes go back to normal in January we are heading into another recession by next summer. You take that much money out of the economy from the working class (who spend it by the way) and it's going to have a negative effect on the economy.

But the expiration of Bush's tax cuts can only be seen as a positive for dealing with the deficit...the rich are only hording right now anyway.

Still, on topic, the "hole" is something that is just made up by the corporate media to make the election seem closer than what it really is. The same shit happened in 2008 when anyone with a brain new Obama was going to have a clean victory against McCain.

CNN and the others just want to pretend "it's too close to call" up to the day of the election. They gotta sell ad space to the two political parties somehow right?

I call bullshit. Obviously there was a conspiracy to boost the numbers in this report by causing more employers to hire people, thereby increasing spending. It's all a massive conspiracy by Democrats to boost the economy, which isn't what Americans really need.

So you are hoping that the agreement endorsed by Paul Ryan will hurt the economy?

So you've gone beyond just defending racists and bigots and now you're hoping that Paul Ryan can damage our economy?

And this is the best option you have for spending your time?

I still think good economic news hurts Obama. The only reason Obama was elected was because he wouldn't make people go on the street as unemployment rose. However, at the moment people get their jobs back, they will all want lower taxes and to throw the (other) bums off the dole by voting Republican.

Um, Lindsay Lohan? The lead singer of Creed? The numbers don't matter now. These endorsements will rocket Mitt to a win.

Sequestration is just another word for Ending Bush Tax Giveaways to the Rich and Corporations.

Fine by me.

@6,

That's pretty much the cycle this country goes through on a regular basis.

1. Republicans in office fuck everything up.
2. People elect democrats to clean up the mess.
3. Just as the mess is starting to go away, people elect republicans again.
4. Go back to # 1.

It's like a drinking binge. Republicans spend like drunken sailors, ignoring the inevitable consequences. Then when everyone wakes up with a hangover, they realize they need to put the democrats in office because the democrats are the only ones who are fiscally responsible. The dems do what needs to be done, and the people - short sighted as ever - complain that they can't have fun anymore and open up that big whiskey bottle labeled "republicans give everyone what they want for free credit card spending spree."

It's a sickness.
