Looks like most people (myself included) underestimate Joe Biden. He fired on all cylinders tonight, and the post-debate commentary on TV news about whether it was bad that Biden was smiling and laughing a lot apparently haven't seen him speak before. It's just one of those things he does.

I didn't see it, but my republican friends from high school on Facebook are in an awful snit. They say Biden looked demented. But since they all voted for Steve King, they wouldn't know demented if it came up and bit them on their oversized asses.

Well kids being "old" is not so bad after all. Of course with all the pot the young folk smoke now I suspect most will be as dumb as Ryan is now when they hit 65. Never mind.

This made me love Joe Biden (previously I was a bit ambivalent) and really really hate Ryan (ok... no change there)

Biden is just plain fearless, and that's what we need.

I think we should start talking about Joe Biden as a real contender for 2016. Before tonight I didn't think he was even a possibility.

Hooray! I was really worried that "charming" "young" "attractive" Ryan would end up on top, if not by any rational rules of debate, then by the same standards by which the President's performance was "disastrous." You may note that my use of quotation marks implies that the qualifiers contained within them are entirely untrue and indeed absurd, because they are.

(Of course it was disastrous... in the ensuing days once all the talking heads reached an idiot consensus that that was what it was, causing it to be that in a self-fulfilling media circle-jerk. The disaster was pundits declaring mild disappointment a disaster, entirely, I think, for the sake of a satisfactorily stressful political narrative.)

Anyway, Go Joe! Glad this one worked out.

Ha! Y'all would call it a win for Biden as long as he walked off the stage under his own power. There's was short odds in Vegas on him falling off the stage.

The smirk will be all that anybody's talking about tomorrow though. Too much, too used car salesman. Creepy, nasty, old dude.

@ 9, Joe Biden will be turning 74 in 2016. Reagan was 69 in 1980. It's a nice thought, but it ain't gonna happen.

Ryan spent that entire debate practicing for his next career as a ShamWow salesman. Biden spent it being the best Biden anyone can be.

It's cute how all of a sudden, Republicans are now the polite, well-mannered party. The "undecided" women polled by CNN sounded a bit vapid when it came to Ryan's regurgitating numbers - "Oh heavens! My vagina doesn't let me do math, so I'll trust the man saying all those number-things."

Enjoy the Kool-Aid, kids, but the polls call it a tie. Which, by the way, is exactly what I thought it'd be. Also: No one pays attention to the VP debate, unless there's a disaster like in 1992 when James Stockdale put a lid on Perot's chances. Which I thought at the time was a calculated move on Perot's part. He never wanted to be president. He only wanted to be Bush's spoiler. That whole thing was all about a feud between Perot and Bush over a business deal in Dallas.

Back to this one. Biden showed that at least the lower half of the ticket desires re-election, and Ryan showed that he's not as utterly unqualified as Agnew, Quayle, or The Naughty Librarian would've been.

Even if I do think Ryan is a supercilious little twit, it was a tie. Yep, a tie. Wishing don't make it true, children.

Paul Constant 21
@20: Your, um, fascinating insights into Ross Perot's intentions in 1992 sure do bolster your credentials for debate analysis in 2012.

That was not a tie. Republicans (like @11) are hating Biden so hard right now it can't have been a tie. That was as clear and decisive a win for Biden as last week's debate was a clear and decisive win for Romney.

I didn't see the debate, but I'll get my 'analysis' from some other outlet than the Fox News of the far left. I'm surprised they weren't both condemned for being heterosexual.

BLUE 23
Didn't bother to watch because it doesn't matter. What matters is what's reported tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. Paul Constant calls this for Biden. Republicans will pitch it for Ryan (Biden old and mean and crazy and...) and the mainstream media will wait and go with the safe and popular story and drill it into your heads.
Posted by BLUE on October 11, 2012 at 8:56 PM

Biden wiped him the hell out. Call it a tie all you want. We all know conservatives can NEVER admit it when they lose or when they're wrong. That's why no one takes their analysis seriously.

I'll give Ryan much props for hanging in there the entire time and not cracking at all under all the pressure (and you know he wanted to), but Biden just could not and would not be stopped. He just ruled.

And Martha Raddatz was great. She asked precisely the kinds of question I thought no mainstream media reporters would.

The networks are calling it a draw, but that's expected. They have always judged Obama more harshly than Romney. It's like they're almost angry that Biden was so dominant.

Biden appears as an argumentative, slightly addled driver who was pulled over by Officer Ryan to receive a speeding ticket.

As the blustery exec yelled his case while on the highway shoulder, cop Ryan politely nodded his head, asked for some respect, and noted it all down, but in the end, Biden got a summons and now he can tell it to the judge.

Biden appears as an argumentative, slightly addled driver who was pulled over by Officer Ryan to receive a speeding ticket. He had set the cruise control at the speed limit, but Ofcr. Ryan wrote it at 10 mph higher.

As the blustery exec yelled at the lying cop, Ofcr. Ryan politely nodded his head, and hoped the old man didn't take the ticket to court, because the judge had told Ofcr. Ryan if he was caught lying again he'd find himself in jail for contempt of court.

That much said, from my position in a passing car, all I see is an argument. Oh, and Biden told a fib or two himself.

I've loved Biden for years, although I'm glad he bowed out of the presidential race in 2008, because Obama was more electable in that season.

The way he moved from passionate, funny, assertive to quiet, caring and conscientious and then back again -- pure Biden brilliance.

A right wing blog must have made the "speeding ticket" analogy already, because vapid parrots Mister "kool-aid" G and Bailo have made the exact same analogy in a half hour of each other.

Seriously guys? Why don't you come up with your own ideas?

Your whining and crying shows pretty clearly that Biden won hands down. The "brains" of the republican party had nothing, and looked like a nervous little kid with his constant shit-eating smirk.

Did you not notice how he just kept repeating the same lines regardless of the topic or the question? That means he has nothing but what was written down by his party to say. I am not even going to bring up the myriad of lies which Biden expertly shot down. Hell, even the moderator was calling Ryan out on the lying.

Biden blatantly lied about his voting record on the AUMF in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Last night: “I was there, I voted against them,” Biden continued. “I said, no, we can’t afford that.”

Biden voted for the Afghanistan resolution on Sept. 14, 2001 which authorized “the use of United States Armed Forces against those responsible for the recent attacks launched against the United States.”

Oct. 11, 2002, Biden voted for a resolution authorizing unilateral military action in Iraq

Source: Washington Post.

Crazy uncle Joe got in Ryan's face, but that does not mean he won the debate. You Democrats have been starved for leadership for so long, anything that looks remotely like command authority is appealing and you can't tell the difference.

@41: You lie. Biden was referring to the Bush tax cuts and the prescription drug plan:

“By the way, they talk about this great recession like it fell out of the sky–like, ‘Oh my goodness, where did it come from?...It came from this man voting to put two wars on a credit card, at the same time, put a prescription drug plan on the credit card, a trillion dollar tax cut for the very wealthy. I was there, I voted against them."

I know you do not care about truth and context, but I know some people on here do. You are just parroting the same lie rolled out by Karl Rove. So you lie and you are unoriginal.

According to delbert's logic, the senile demented fool that was Ronald Reagan and the drop-dead idiot named Bush II defines "leadership". I guess being responsible and keeping us out of foreign quagmires, balancing the budget and presiding over the largest peacetime economic expansion as Clinton did, and now bringing the country back to economic security, and keeping foreign entanglements to a minimum as Obama has equates to us Democrats not knowing what true leadership looks like.

Newsflash delbert: politicians lie. They all do it. You clutching your pearls and getting your knickers into a twist about Biden's lie on his voting record hardly equates to Rmoney and Ryan lying about their tax plans, their positions on Medicare, their statements on abortion and women's rights; Biden's lie was about his record, the voting record of a single man, which is a world of difference from the continuous series of lies that your side tells. I'll take the Dems flavor of leadership over the Repubs any day as at least there is a semblance of responsibility that goes along with it.

Biden's statement “I was there, I voted against them...I said, no, we can’t afford that.” was re: the Bush tax cuts and the Medicare Part D all being put on the "credit card;" that is, just added to the deficit. It was not about the AUMF or Afghanistan. Do all of you guys lie, or just you, Romney, Ryan, Boehner, Cantor, and McConnell? Oh and Akin, Issa, ...sorry, running out of time.

Here's the full quote, you dumb ass. If only someone had posted a transcript of the debate. Oh, they did (http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/201… ):

"And, by the way, they talk about this Great Recession if it fell out of the sky, like, "Oh, my goodness, where did it come from?" It came from this man voting to put two wars on a credit card, to at the same time put a prescription drug benefit on the credit card, a trillion-dollar tax cut for the very wealthy. I was there. I voted against them. I said, no, we can't afford that. And now, all of a sudden, these guys are so seized with the concern about the debt that THEY created."

#43, Reagan and Bush Jr. definitely showed leadership, as did Clinton. To what end, that's a different story. I think Bush Jr., in particular, will be seen by historians as one of the worst two or three presidents. In any case, leadership or not, we're talking about three presidents who each served two terms and who each had a big impact.

From #37 (Mister "Kool-Aid" G):

Yeah man, those are super different. I guess I can just not read well enough to tell how totally different they are. You must be joking because no one is that fucking stupid. Poor, poor Theodore Gorath.

Unlike Teddy, I can read. In his post #40, Teddy wrote that I made the "exact same analogy" in my post #37 made in someone else's post #34.

When I called Teddy an idiot and told him read the posts again, the stupid fool came back in his post #48 and wrote that my post #37 had made "the exact same opening remark" as someone else's post #34.

Poor, poor Teddy apparently is such an ADD case that he didn't read past the first sentence. Poor, poor Teddy Gorath. Flunked special ed, and now haunts the comments section of The Stranger.

Keep on denying it, but it is in clear black and white. Use all the bold text and special ed comments you like. At least I can form my own ideas and thoughts, and not steal them from John Bailo, of all people.
