I hope this President Obama shows up for the next two debates:
"[Romney]'s trying to go through an extreme makeover. After running for more than a year in which he called himself severely conservative, Mitt Romney's trying to convince you that he was severely kidding," said Obama at a campaign event in Florida. "Look. What he was selling was not working. Because people understood his ideas wouldn't help the middle class so these days Mitt Romney's for whatever you're for."
Obama continued:
Suddenly he loves the middle class. Can't stop talking enough about them. He loves Medicare. Loves teachers. He even loves the most important parts of Obamacare. What happened? Now, what does he have to say this new version of Mitt Romney about all the things he's actually promised to do as president? Tax breaks for outsourcers? Never heard of such a thing. Saying we should cut back on teachers? Doesn't ring a bell.
No matter how much Romney gains in the polls, his likability numbers remain in the toilet. I think America would love to watch President Obama take Mitt Romney behind the woodshed and just beat the ever-loving shit out of him. Especially because the Republican debates proved that when you attack Romney, he gets petulant and weird—the more you attack him, the worse he looks. If President Obama can keep this kind of mocking attack vibe and make it work in the town hall debate on October 16th, I think we'll see the real Mitt Romney show his face.
(Thanks, Slog tipper Layne.)
