Tomorrow: Let's Talk About Community Police Commissions!

Posted by on Wed, Oct 10, 2012 at 12:51 PM

Today Mayor Mike McGinn announced his intention to create a Community Police Commission, whose purpose will be to push police department reform, help establish policing priorities, and "promote community confidence" by reassuring Seattleites that they aren't one traffic stop from being tased or punched in the face.

This isn't a surprise—the Commission is part of Seattle's Settlement Agreement and the Memorandum of Understanding with the Department of Justice.

It will include 11 people: someone representing each Seattle precinct, along with members of police officer unions, religious people, brown people, and the youths. If you're interested in being on a sexy, sexy city police commission, here's how to apply (deadline is November 1!).

You may be asking yourself, "What actual power will this shiny new city commission have on the Seattle Police department?" The answer is, write Reports! Reports! Reports! Tomorrow at 10:30 a.m., Seattle City Council member Bruce Harrell, chair of the council's public safety committee, will introduce legislation that, among other things, outlines the duties of the committee.

Harrell's legislation will be up for discussion/debate during tomorrow morning's meeting, so now's your time to pour some fresh, hot input into City Hall. If you're so inclined.

Tomorrow: Let's watch McGinn try to make himself look re-electable.

That's what you really should have posted, right?

We love our Mayor.

It's only the DSA wannabes and their suburban whiners that don't.

Now stop stealing our Seattle bus service!
