Mitt Romney Etch-a-Sketches on Detainees

Posted by on Wed, Oct 10, 2012 at 12:20 PM

Q: Hey, Mitt Romney of January 2012: Would you have signed legislation allowing the military to indefinitely detain American citizens?

A; "Yes, I would have" signed the legislation.

Q: Hey, Mitt Romney of October 2012: Would you have signed legislation allowing the military to indefinitely detain American citizens?

A: "I'll take a look at that particular piece of legislation."

Q: Now, wait a damn minute. I just noticed that you're the exact same guy, making two completely different statements within the span of less than a year. Is it true that even though your campaign openly admitted to a plan of shaking the campaign like an Etch-a-Sketch to much derision earlier this year, you're just going ahead with the Etch-a-Sketch plan anyway? Do you think the American people are stupid? What do you really believe, anyway?

A: ...

Q: God, I hate you so fucking much.

So how is this change in position (oh, pardon me, LIE!!!) any different in Obama's change in position (aka LIE!!!) about same sex marriage?

I can't watch the video at work but I hope he says something in the Oct video other than "I'll take a look at that particular piece of legislation." because going from that to "yes, I would have" is not a lie or a change. That's a "I don't know I'll look into it" followed by a "I've looked into it and I want it".

I don't like the phrase "etch-a-sketches", because when I see "etch-a-sketch" my brain recalls happy fun times with the etch-a-sketch and positivity, which is not what you are trying to convey at all.

I understand it rationally, but that doesn't help at all.

@2, Retroactive Man supports gay marriage too, or at least he will eventually and then of course it will be what his position always has been all along.

Your absolutely right Retroactive Man doesn't lie, for one to lie there must be something to lie about, since Retroactive Man is in a constant state of flux he can't lie because he isn't really saying what he is saying. Besides as soon as he is done saying it, it will change anyway.

It's terrible when any candidate etch-a-sketches. Unless, of course...

"It is time to restore oversight and accountability in the FISA program, and this proposal -- with an unprecedented grant of retroactive immunity -- is not the place to start."

Obama before he supported retroactive immunity.

"I think the basic concept of using medical marijuana for the same purposes and with the same controls as other drugs prescribed by doctors, I think that's entirely appropriate..." "...I'm not going to be using Justice Department resources to try to circumvent state laws on this issue."

Obama before he raided more medical marijuana dispensaries than Bush.

"We need to empower federal employees as watchdogs of wrongdoing and partners in performance. Barack Obama will strengthen whistleblower laws to protect federal workers who expose waste, fraud, and abuse of authority in government." -- Obama/Biden Campaign official Document for Change

This was before Obama prosecuted more whistleblowers than all other Presidents combined.

So, yeah, etch-a-sketching candidates do suck.

@2: It's one thing to change your views on a subject - that's called being a human.

It's another to wildly swing from one side of every single issue to the other, based on the audience you have in front of you. That's called spineless pandering.

Is the biggest problem you have with the NDAA that Romney can't decide whether he'd sign it? What about the guy WHO SIGNED IT?

LJM, would you please stop using the construction "Obama [something] more than all other presidents combined"? It's insipid and you ought to know that.
