The Morning News

Posted by on Fri, Oct 5, 2012 at 6:00 AM

The enthusiasm gap: Matt Bai on the problem of Obama's stage presence.

And it's a problem why exactly? Because 67 million people watched the first debate.

Now he tells us: Romney says that 47 percent stuff was "completely wrong."

Obama on the debate: He enjoyed meeting "this very spirited fellow who claimed to be Mitt Romney.”

If you think it's bad for newspapers in America: Try Israel, where the print world is in even greater turmoil—in part because Sheldon Adelson (yes, that Sheldon Adelson) is now printing a free national newspaper. Wonder what he wants...

SPEAA vs. Boeing: An olive branch?

Sanders vs. McCloud: The Seattle Times takes a look. (And here's our look from August.)

Tuba man killer: Back in jail, yet again.

Horse meat tartare: It shall not be on the menu in New York.

And courtesy of Goldy, who writes: "One of the huge advantages Democrat Jay Inslee has over Republican Rob McKenna in Washington's governor's race is that he is Jay Inslee. Watch the two candidates' introductory ads side-by-side with the sound off, and imagine which one will prove more appealing to voters."

Yeah, McKenna's a geeky dork and he comes off as strident and lecturing, where Gramps is warm and friendly-lookin'. So what? Appearances matter?

May as well put a video of Obama next to one of Rmoney, play them side-by-side for a bunch of white southern voters, and ask them which one appeals to them more... you will get the result you expected.

Stick to the policy and party differences between Inslee and McKenna, Goldy.

I try not to base my opinions on looks. Since I am not from Washington, I have limited visuals of either candidate, but I have read a lot about them in "The Stranger." McKenna is an asshole and the last person who should ever be governor of your state. Since governorships sometimes turn into campaigns for POTUS, I am grateful that McKenna is no George Clooney in the looks department.

I've never noticed that Inslee was such a hunk before... Makes me feel better that I can make sexist comments about male politicians now! I'm going to start insisting to my friends that we must vote for the better looking candidate.

Seriously though, maybe McKenna will be voted in because he kinda looks like Gates. Might confuse people.

I'm an out of stater who is more familiar w/ the names than the faces. Seeing their faces, they look practically identical!

Uh, things like appearance matter on the margins, guys. Not everyone puts as much thought into voting as we do. How many won't vote for Obama because of the color of his skin? Maybe just a small percentage of the electorate, but these contests are won by small margins.

My ex's grandma votes based on which candidate has better hair. No joke. This stuff happens.

Glad you guys are back. That McKenna thing yesterday was old after about three minutes.

I cannot say that I'm an unbiased judge, but where is all this shit about Obama during the debates coming from? People, I suppose, were pissed that he wasn't more aggressive in nailing Rmoney's ass to the floor over some pretty big factual errors. Do I want my president to be a bulldog? Yes, when it matters. I didn't think he fared all that badly. I could tell by the subtle looks on his face (a more gentlemanly, learned way of showing disapproval) that he was saying, "Oh you lying son-of-a-bitch." Of course, most Americans (and certainly most pundits) wouldn't know subtle if it hit them in the back of the head with a frying pan.

You have to be careful when you go for the throat. Remember Al Gore's sighs? Made him look like a twink. But you don't want to come off looking like Ross Perot either.

My feeling is that President Obama let Rmoney get all the lies out on the first debate. If Rmoney continues to stand on his fictions, the President will put him in the witness stand in Round Two or Three - which will be closer to election day.

The economy is still in the doldrums to be sure, but President Obama has accomplished a lot in the first term. He has Wall Street under the microscope (and of course they hate being there). He's introduced student loan legislation to help people from defaulting and created the consumer credit bureau. He got rid of Enemy #1. Much more:

He can run on his record alone.
