Thanks to Mitt Romney, Big Bird Is the King of the Internet Right Now

Posted by on Fri, Oct 5, 2012 at 10:36 AM

It's like the Goofus and Gallant of the internet! BuzzFeed has posted a collection of all the funny/sad Big Bird memes to hit the internet since Wednesday's debate.

Meanwhile, Andrew Beaujon at Poynter has published a thoughtful post about how PBS has smartly capitalized on the moment of fame Romney handed them to explain where the money goes and just how little the money Romney's discussing really is compared to the whole federal budget. The post also reveals that Big Bird has been requested as a guest on Saturday Night Live, Jimmy Fallon, Piers Morgan, and two network morning news shows in the days since the debate.

Romney has been using this Big Bird line for months, and Republican crowds love it. But when he said it in front of the biggest audience he's ever had, it took on a different tone. Despite the fact that everyone considers Romney to be the winner of the debate, that Big Bird line might be the one debate comment that hurts the most, politically speaking.

So Romney loses by attacking Big Bird.
That will be amazing.
But only if Obama's team can make the connection in their ads.
The federal government brings in $X in taxes / fees / duties / etc.
PBS (Big Bird) gets Y% of that (Y being some tiny number).
So why is Romney claiming that American has to BORROW money from China to fund Big Bird?

Where's the money that we're paying in taxes going?

If big bird meme is the only thing that Obama in a bubble has to come back with, we're fucked. He's compromised himself into a corner and sold out everyone on things like #NDAA and drones. He has to learn how to fight along side the people who got him elected in the first place. People our dying out here and can't put food on the table. There's no fire in the belly with in bubble Obama just 'big bird' jokes. It's slick BS.

You do know that Obama is not sitting at his desk making these memes, or trying to get guests booked on late shows, right?

@7 We also know Obama was never sitting at his desk telling Timmy Geither "You WILL find a way to reign in those banks and put Lloyd Blankfein in jail." That's what we're talking about.

I'll bet that Romney thought that as long as he left Elmo out of it, he'd be safe picking on Big Bird.

Wrong, bitch. You don't fuck with my Big Bird, you don't fuck with my Bert and Ernie, you don't fuck with my Waiter Grover and Mr. Johnson, you don't fuck with my Monsterpiece Theater, and you sure as hell don't fuck with my Pointer Sisters pinball.

Romney isn't being honest. He didn't say what he really means when he wants to cut funding to PBS and, of course, NPR.
It's code talk for "get them liberals", "get them Blacks and Latinos". All things public are bad, bad, bad.

GRRr. "get them gays and their fancy PBS Masterpiece movies!"

I propose we start a Yellow Feather movement to protest cuts to PBS. Forget ribbons, wear a yellow feather to support Big Bird!

@10 Your only half right. Now turn the coin over. If the Feds cut off funding to NPR and PBS it is not the stations in the major metropolitan areas and Blue States that will shut down. It is the ones in the rural areas and Red States that will close. Ignorance is today's Republican party friend.
