The big reason I agreed to blog for the Stranger is to reach readers who have been influenced by this publication's mischaracterization of me—especially women.

Take this September poll conducted by King5 television:

Women favor Inslee over McKenna by a big margin (53 percent to 39 percent), while men narrowly favor McKenna (48 percent to 45 percent).

Some people could interpret this poll to mean that women don’t like me. Personally, I just think that women don't know me—or what they "know" is limited to what they've read on sites like this. So, I want to take a minute to talk plainly about a topic that’s near and dear to me: You.

Hi. My name is Rob McKenna and I'm a feminist.

During my tenure as your state Attorney General, I've championed legislation that strengthens penalties for domestic violence. I've worked to pass a new law making sexual assault and stalking victims eligible for state employee leave sharing programs. I've also helped pass numerous bills that combat sex trafficking. On top of that, in my free time I regularly volunteer at a sexual assault resource center with my wife and two daughters.

You might not know that there are over 1,000 professionals working in the AG's office and that over half of them are women. Furthermore, over half of the people I've appointed to top positions in my office are women.

I'm aware that there's still a thick glass ceiling blocking many women from attaining professional success. But as Governor, I promise you that I will continue to appoint qualified women to positions of power. With your help, I can be the man who hands you the broom to break through that ceiling.
