Mitt Romney Is Not as Well-Loved as George W. Bush

Posted by on Fri, Sep 28, 2012 at 12:47 PM

No, really. Wonkette says:

A recent Bloomberg survey revealed that a full 43 percent of Americans have a positive view of Mitt Romney, against only 50 percent who don’t. This puts Romney only 3 percentage points away from America’s most beloved president, George W. Bush!

Yes, a full 46 percent of Americans apparently have fond memories of George W. Bush, though it’s likely that most of these people are political comedy writers who miss the endless stream of easy jokes.

If this whole election thing doesn't work out for Romney—knock wood if you're superstitious—I could see he and George W. Bush getting along real well: Taking vacations to the Caymans together, comparing portfolios, boating at Kennebunkport. They'd both be about equally loved by their own party, and when you put a pariah together with a pariah, they're not pariahs anymore; they're a super-exclusive clique!

Oh, that is sad! But I can see it. Romney is so far from passing the beer test, and not just cause he doesn't drink...

Mittens doesn't have to worry much...he's still in the 1% and they are the ones in charge of the country. I've never understood why he even ran unless it's daddy issues.

cato, i think you've nailed it. he was pressured into a political career, and it didn't suit him. i think the same about al gore. it was expected of him, but not right for him.

@3 because it's his turn to be president!

Despite his mistakes, foolishness, and duplicity; despite his inability to do the right thing as POTUS, George W. Bush seems like someone I wouldn't mind watching a baseball game with. Mitt lacks that 'human' thing.

@6: Agreed. GWB always struck me as guileless and dopey and unsubtle. Never sinister. I don't think his widely agreed-upon lack of wits is commensurate with his oft-posited evil agenda. That shit was all Dick Cheney and Co.

@ 2, I was getting lunch in downtown Seattle one day and there was a bicycle messenger in line ahead of me. He had a button on his bag that said "Give the pretzel another chance."

Bush has always been on my fantasy dinner guest list. I hated his policies, and boy did he screw this country up, but I found him to be charming and as a person.

Romney - I should point out - told a joke that actually made me laugh out loud the other day. It was after sharing a stage with Bill Clinton at the Global Initiative summit:

"If there's one thing we've learned this election, it's that Bill Clinton can do a man a lot of good. I'm just waiting for that bounce."

The delivery was good, too - it actually made him more likable (as a person) in my book.
