Washington's Jews Just LOVE President Obama

Posted by on Thu, Sep 27, 2012 at 1:34 PM

A new poll conducted September 21-22 by Gravis Marketing finds Washington voters favoring President Barack Obama by a 56.4 percent to 38.6 percent margin over Mitt Romney, with only 5 percent undecided. Not all that surprising in itself. Washington has never been remotely in play.

But the part of the poll that I found really interesting was when they broke out the cross-tabs by religious affiliation:

That's right: 100 percent of Jews surveyed said that they were likely or very likely to voter for President Obama, whereas Mitt Romney suspiciously gets the support of 50 percent of all Muslims! Who's the Kenyan Islamo-Socialist now?

(Of course with Jews making up only 1.1 percent of the 625 voters surveyed, that doesn't make for much of a useful statistical sample, but it sure is fun to pretend it does. Yay for math!)

What's with the Muslim vote being 50-50?

1.1% of 625 is 7 people. I'm not sure how they get 16.7% as only "likely" voters tho, since 16.7% of 7 is 1.17 people.

What's with the 18-30 year old voters- why are they so Romney oriented?

@1 Uh, Obama has killed a few Muslims...it might make them dislike him. That would be my guess.

What? Six comments and no one has yet voiced outrage that Obama is being represented on the graph by Chocolate Brown? OutRage!! Obviously he should be Cafe au Lait.
And why is Rmoney blue? Blue is the Democrats colour. Mitt's color is so obviously green, people get with the program here.

It is disturbing that pollsters are incompetent at statistics. They had a sample size of six, and they gave us three significant figures???

@1 What's with half of Washington's Muslim voters? I'd guess a mix of social conservatism with the sheer masochism of voting for someone who hates you.

Mormonism was modeled after Islam.

BTW, RE the "what's with the Muslim voters" question in this thread. I'd love to see good polling of Muslim Americans, and some follow-ups where they express their views and explain their priorities. I'm not that familiar with the community (nor even whether it should be considered a single, monolithic community), and I'd be interested to learn.

But this here is sixteen people claiming to be Muslim in response to a pollster. Eight were for Obama, eight for Romney. Even if we were to accept their self-identification as Muslim (and I can see all sorts of reasons for an ornery right-winger to mess with the pollster on that question), with a sample size of sixteen your error bars should be huge. Sure, could be 50/50 - but it could just about as easily be 75/25 in either direction.

Shorter me: if the sample size is a joke, ignore the result.

Where's the Mormon category? Or are they included in the Off Topic Christmas category?

Are athiests Other, or not represented?

You can get an 83.3/16.7 split if you asked 6 people (or multiples thereof), which is 0.8% of 625, not 1.1%.

Muslims are generally against same-sex marriage. They're much more likely to agree with Romney's social views.

Yasher koach, Jews.

@4

my guess is it's a lot of self-righteous, narcissistic, left-leaning younger people who refuse to vote for Obama because of his "war crimes, maaaaaannnn...", so they'll be abstaining from voting or voting third party. ergo, pollsters just chalked those up to votes for Romney?

@4, notice that was the smallest part of the sample, thus the greatest margin of error. Consider also that the sample includes only those 18-30 year-olds who completed a telephone survey. Don't these surveys mostly go to land lines (a conservative technology, if you will)? So it's a cohort that could skew conservative as sampled.

@2 - 16.7% is exactly one sixth. So it sounds like there were six Jews who answered the question, and one person who hung up after saying he was Jewish but before answering the question about who he was supporting for president.
