Obama's Ohio and Football Game

Posted by on Tue, Sep 25, 2012 at 11:41 AM

It must be pointed out that Romney has not had good news in the polls for a long fucking time...

I'm always trying to spot the turning point in this presidential race, the point when victory is sealed for a candidate. Could that point be last night's football game? The whole sorry business appears to be politically charged—unions, greedy owners, and all the rest of it. A writer at Fox Sports goes so far as to compare the referee mess with the subprime-mortgage mess that resulted in The Long Recession:
Yep, picture commissioner Roger Goodell as presidents Reagan and Clinton greedily and temporarily relaxing oversight of NFL games at the behest of Wall Street billionaire owners. Next, picture NFL coaches and players as stock, bond and mortgage brokers recognizing the relaxed oversight and greedily ignoring all the rules.

The result? Week 3 of the 2012 season, the football weekend when chaos marred one of the most exciting 24 hours in NFL history, the weekend The Great Referee Collapse of 2012 overshadowed the presidential race and everything else.

Obama is most likely to benefit politically from The Great Referee Collapse of 2012.

The turning point was when Republicans realized Mitt Romney was the best candidate they could come up with, out of a pool of complete losers.

Sure, Obama will benefit...until Romney funnels $50 million to the NFL in order to get the real refs back to work (credit: Bill Simmons).

@2: I still wouldn't vote for the spud, but I'd like Romney a lot better if he got the real refs back on the field.

Good Afternoon Charles,
Very dubious that last night's badly called game will give Obama a boost let alone be a "turning point in this presidential race, the point when victory is sealed for a candidate". It could be if he somehow negotiates an agreement between the owners and/or the NFL and the Referees' Union. That would be historic. But, right now our President has far more important things on his mind.

Actually, any news that isn't directly political and harmful to the President is beneficial to him. Any news that pushes Mr. Romney off the front page benefits the President.

Mr. Romney has a very short period of time to convince the American people - or at least those in Ohio, Florida, and Virginia - to make a change. If the news is filled with the NFL, the Emmys, a blockbuster movie, or some other kind of trivia that makes for good television, then it blocks Mr. Romney's access to our screens and thoughts.
