People doing novel things purely for the sake of novelty annoy me (and the fact that the "house" will house no permanent residents relegates this to novelty.)

Why don't they move to Seattle.

According to the PI there's a coming apartment glut.

Rents should be crashing soon.

@3, yeah! Right on! Fucking people having fun and trying new things! Goddamn it!

But they're not even trying anything new is the thing. I mean, if I had the money I could surely commission somebody to build an even narrower home than that, but there'd be no practical value to it whatsoever. And I guess I don't see where the "fun" would be either (and I'm a fun, hip guy! Honestly. A bit of a curmudgeon, but still fun! Perhaps? ) Though I suppose I should really just keep my mouth shut. One man's narrow motel is another man's fun.

Sounds cool. And also the three week rentals to artists. Charles, you should apply! Make a movie while you're there - "narrow house, wide brain"

Instead of putting it between two buildings that are close together, I'd rather have my "narrowest house" be 71cm (or whatever) wide but with no obstructions on length of it with large expanses of glass; I'd call it the "pressed flower house" or something.

Eh, I prefer the Montlake Spite House:

(linking to this article because Jen's original article was mostly about an art show... so there!)

@8 charles the offer is still there, but what the fuck, I'm going to look into it myself for a three week work vacation. Thanks for this post.

"Narrow house. narrow mind" Would be far more appropriate for Charles.

I also would hate to see the pig sty he would turn that tiny house into in 3 weeks.

When does Roger Valdez get to live there?

At Kloveniersburgwal 26 stands a house with a beautiful cornice gable, 2.44 meters (about 8 ft.) wide. This house is known as the “Kleine Trippenhuis,” or “the House of the Mr. Trip’s Coachman”. Oddly enough, this house is right across the street from the Trippenhuis at number 29, a building that, with its width of 22 meters (72 ft. 2 in.), is the widest house in Amsterdam. It was built in 1660 by the very wealthy brothers Lodewijk and Hendrick Trip. As the story goes, one day Mr. Trip’s coachman proclaimed, “Goodness, I would even be happy with a house that is as wide as my master’s front door.” Mr. Trip heard this and made sure that the coachman got his wish.

Do you get the impression this guy isn't the actual architect but just some guy they found on the street? His two statements amount to:

-the lack of width makes it hard
-the other challenge is "putting it there"
