Slog Mormon Study: Mosiah 11:6

Posted by on Sun, Sep 23, 2012 at 7:00 AM

[Slog Bible Study is on hiatus through the November election as we honor Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney by studying the scriptures of his Mormon religion.]

Book of Mormon, Mosiah 11:6
Yea, and thus they were supported in their laziness, and in their idolatry, and in their whoredoms, by the taxes which king Noah had put upon his people; thus did the people labor exceedingly to support iniquity.

Discuss.

Never thought I'd say this, but, god I miss the old testament!

Context? Who're the 'they' of which Mosiah speaks?

C'mon, which is it?! Were they lazy or laboring exceedingly. Though it's amusing, serious whoring and idolatry takes serious effort.

This is not surprising. Their "Sacred Text" was written by a guy who had had several run-ins with the law, and was doubtless no fan of the gubbermint. You can almost hear the petulance.

Supposedly they no longer pray for the destruction of the United Stares in their Temple ceremonies - after all, we're the ones who did in Old Joe - but since that's a secret ritual (eye roll) no one knows.

I used to think Mormonism was sort of interesting, but if that drip Romney is the best they've got, no thanks.

"Yea" is pronounced "Yay," right?

When will these ancient texts, written by god, get around to explaining things of real importance like bacterial infections and airplane etiquette? Nothing about galaxies or cell division? Hmm. God was stupid back then. I think I'll ignore him. It was a him they whorship, right? Except men have nipples because we all start as female in the womb. So all that rib stuff doesn't add up either. Geez, god was dumb.

When this gets out the ranks of mormonism are going to swell with tea baggers. They are going to throw over that hippy jesus like a money changers table and get with the original tea-bagger: Joseph Smith!

I'm with #3 Mrs. Blue on this one. What is it? Lazy or labor exceedingly? Who was the editor on this?

@3, @11, As I read it, "they" are the the 47 percent, whereas "the people" are the hard working real Americans who are taxed to support them.

Many ex-mormons are expecting the release today of a secretly recorded video showing Mitt Romney in the mormon temple wearing ritualistic clothing and swearing that he will give his time, will, money, and power to the mormon church. He swears that the mormon church will always come first and foremost, before all else. I'm crossing my fingers for its release.

"They" might as well be the Mormons gleefully living off of the state with every handout that's available to them.

Laziness, idolatry, and whoredoms? That's just a regular Sunday afternoon at my house.

Of course, I work my ass off all week long, and I pay my taxes, so Romney can suck it....

@7. Men were given nipples so they could enjoy the rush of tit play. Happy Folsom Street!

As for context, the "They" in this case is the king, his concubines, and all the priests and ministers he'd appointed; basically, the powerful and the religious were being subsidized by the working class.

Also worthy of noteā€”the crushing tax rate being applied was 20%.

I don't really care for whoring. Because it gets into annoying "economics" and the "market" crap. Not that I have anything against sex workers, not at all. It's just that sluttery is so much more fun, and sluts do it for free. It seems better that way. More socially bonding.

@7: There's actually a lot of the Pentateuch devoted to things like "proper hygiene" and "how to tell if it's leprosy".

@18 - So basically, this was a bog-standard extractive polity, where the ruling elite abused its status to live extravagantly on resources appropriated from the masses. That's nothing at all like welfare, since poor people have little power and cannot command resources by force. Aid to the poor, even when brought by the coercive power of government, requires a spirit of generosity to make it happen.

LAWL! As if we needed more proof that the whole thing is a joke- the sin in the book of Mosey is laziness!
So who wants to come up with the rules for the Book of Moron Drinking Game? C'mon, it would be super easy.
