This Saturday at the Moore: The Nail-Biting Resolution of the 2012 Genius Awards (Plus an Awesome Party)

This Saturday night, for the first time in history, the Stranger Genius Awards—which annually honor five artists and have typically been announced months in advance in the paper—will be revealed live onstage.

Will Dina Martina jouge the eyes from her (also genius) competition? Will Master Musicians of Bukkake splatter onto Lori Goldston and THEESatisfaction? CAN ANYONE BEAT "THE SKOOG"??

On Saturday night, we will have the answers. But however the title distribution works itself out, the moral is this: All of these people are entirely worthy of Genius Awards.

Beyond the award-bestowing, Saturday's night Genius Bash will feature the Seattle Rock Orchestra playing the music of all our Music Genius nominees (with nominee Lori Goldston joining them onstage) and a performance by Velocity Dance Center's Kate Wallich. Get your tickets here.

@1 - You just wait 'till you get viciously jouged by a drag queen. I can tell you it is not as fun as it sounds.

@3 - exactly x100. I love SLOG and read it daily but this footer ad cuts like 15% of the text viewing space and gets super annoying very quickly. Please o please rethink it.

This event seems set up to treat the artists it's nominally praising pretty callously. Please get rid of the "short list!" If you can't choose one "genius," let multiple winners split the available funds. Maybe some years you'll have two or three in a category, some years, none. This isn't the Oscars-- either pay someone the compliment of saying you think they're a genius, or don't. Have a party about them. Cool.

This started as such a nice idea-- surprising people at their cruddy day jobs with a sheet cake and a check was a sweet, unexpected reminder that someone's art was appreciated. But by making it competitive, The Stranger is essentially telling some wonderful, incomparable artists that they're lesser than other wonderful, incomparable artists-- or that they're not *quite* a genius.

It's a pisser. It makes me sad.

Remember, dress code is gold sequinned dresses.

Bow ties optional. As are Stetsons and Fezzes.
