Mitt Romney's Latest, Sarcastic Flip-Flop on Obamacare

Posted by on Thu, Sep 20, 2012 at 1:56 PM

Remember yesterday, when Romney seemed proud of Obamacare, a second before saying he'd repeal and replace it? Turns out, PSYCH!

Mitt Romney's presidential campaign clarified on Thursday that the Republican candidate was joking when he declared a day earlier that he thought it was "a compliment" to be called the grandfather of Obamacare, the president's health care law.

"He was being facetious," top adviser Kevin Madden said in an email to The Huffington Post.

That's what I like in a presidential candidate: An inability to tell whether he was being facetious or not when he makes an important statement that seems to upend his most recent stand on a policy. (And, yes, that is a facetious statement.)

This is a novel way to try to have it both ways.

it was pretty obvious if you listened to the audio. willard, flippancy does not serve a presidential candidate well.

Good god... It seems like Romney's so confused at this point he doesn't know whether to scratch his watch or wind his ass.

You people have no sense of humor. When he was going to Planned Parenthood fundraisers, being facetious, telling the gay community he would be their voice within the Republican party, being facetious, releasing a plan for climate change for Massachusetts, being facetious, supporting the assault weapon ban, being facetious.

@4 - It helps if you saw that he was doing air quotes nonstop for years.

Paul, don't you get it yet? This is Romney's super power as Dan Savage would say. He's Retroactive Man. He can go back and change what he said and did in the past at will. He's Retroactive Man.

Retroactive Man can retire at whatever point in the past that he wants to and change it again in the future should the need arise.

Retroactive Man can be pro choice or pro life at will, whichever position is needed at the time is Retroactive Man's position. Any former position now means what his current position is.

Retroactive Man can enact health care reform and repeal it at the same time.

Retroactive Man can be whatever you need him to be so long as you are looking at him. For as soon as you turn away he will retroactively become something else.

And thats why we can trust him to be President.

Sincerely

Gay Dude for Retroactive Man.

It was not intended to be a factual statement!

Factual / Facetious, it's easy to get wrong...

Has anyone else notices that Romney likes to make big moderate sounding statements in front of large television audiences and then have his campaign quietly correct without as much sound a fury? I'm starting to believe this is an intentional strategy.

@7: So Romney is playing some kind of real-world version of Braid?

When I uttered "entitled" in that vicious manner, I was just being facetious.

When I put my dog's crate on top of my car and drove a considerable distance, I was just being facetious. Besides, he seemed to like it (after he was finished being sick).

After I and my chums held down that queer kid with the long hair which he deserved to have hacked off, I was being facetious. Even though I don't recall the event.

There's another word that starts with "F" which is what the Mittbot is, prefaced with "Sick".

So what makes Romney think that people will vote for someone who says something in public and then has his help put out statements contradicting his public pronouncements?
I think Romney doesn't understand how much he is disliked.

Doesn't Romney know that if you have to explain the joke it wasn't funny?
