Another Day for Ol' Etch A Sketch

Posted by on Wed, Sep 19, 2012 at 4:40 PM

ThinkProgress notes that at a Univision Town Hall, Mitt Romney cops to being "the grandfather of Obamacare," and then admits he hoodwinked Republicans into voting for him during the primaries. Here's video:

And here's the quote:

“Now and then the president says I’m the grandfather of Obamacare. I don’t think he meant that as a compliment, but I’ll take it,” [Romney] said at a Univision forum, adding, “this was during my primary we thought it might not be helpful.”

How do Republicans manage to convince themselves to vote for this guy? He's practically boasting about sneaking Romneycare past them in the primaries, even as he swears he'll repeal the reform that was based on his (on-again, off-again) pride and joy in the same breath.

It really does floor me every time I realize this yo-yo is polling over about 14%. About 14% really have a truly rational basis to vote R-Money and more (or rather less) power to 'em. But I really don't get the other 30. I mean seriously, WTF? How can they hate the O so much that Mittens looks like the lesser evil?

Did they attempt to make his skin browner before going on Univision?

superficial distractions aside, how do centrists manage to convince themselves that it actually matters who wins?

Better question: why the hell is he wasting time pandering to Latinos?

Jesus Mitt - the goddamn plane has crashed into the mountain! Get your Swarovski-crystal ass to Florida and start conning some seniors! They're a lot easier to scare into voting for you than Latinos; the only thing Latinos are afraid of is you becoming president.

@3,here's how: it's a choice between an actual centrist and a brainless rich bastard.

I give it three years before Mittens gets the "John Edwards" treatment; probably for tax evasion or something else financially sketchy. He's probably pissed off enough people on both sides of the political spectrum at this point that even being a quarter-billionaire won't save him.

@5 being rich is relative. i haven't had ben &jerry's for over 5 years because it's too pricey for my budget. the generic local dairy frozen slop is a little less "fantastic" but it does the job.

Being rich is not relative. Not in the least bit.

Do we have to have the Genius Awards banner now? Will we have banners for everything Stranger does? Can it be made to go away?

This would be actually be a step in the right direction for Mitt.

The funny thing I keep seeing is that the conservatives are saying: "Of course his campaign is falling apart! He's not far enough to the right!"

I mean, really? Come the fuck on.

The crazy right looks like they might actually lose the Senate majority because of all the Tea Bagger insanity being thrown at the electorate. Can you imagine? Obama will still have a hand tied behind his back, but it's progress!

Keep drinkin' the Kool-Aid. Meanwhile, the Mittster has pulled even with Obama in the latest Gallup tracking poll.

The last point in that Gallup poll is the rolling average for Sept 13th-19th. It will be interesting to see what the poll says for the next week.

Quote from Nate Silver's Twitter feed on 9/19: "The. Polls. Have. Stopped. Making. Any. Sense."

In particular, he was frustrated that a Marquette poll shows Obama up 14 in Wisconsin, while Rasmussen shows Romney up 3 in New Hampshire.

As Nate says, "There is no plausible universe in which Mr. Obama wins Wisconsin by 14 points but loses New Hampshire by three."

The latest polls are always interesting to the political junkies, myself included. But if you've been around the track a few times, you learn to look at the trends and not the snapshots, and to take any hyperventilations over this or that gaffe with a boulder of salt.

No one in politics is ever as smart, or as dumb, as they look. Romney isn't "melting down," and his "47%" stuff wasn't a game changer. It was just a restatement of what the Republicans have been saying for 80 years, ever since F.D.R. was elected.

There are no magic bullets. This is a close election, and given the fragile state of the economy and the historical link between that and election results, it's Romney's election to lose. And Obama's to win, I might add. I am mightily unimpressed by the Obama campaign's overconfidence since the Democratic convention. When will the Democrats ever learn?
