PA State Supreme Court Vacates Voter ID Law

Posted by on Tue, Sep 18, 2012 at 11:17 AM

At the time Pennsylvania passed its repressive voter ID law, Republican House Majority Leader Mike Turzai was blunt about its intent, proudly proclaiming at a State Republican Committee meeting that the law was "gonna allow Governor Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania."

Well, maybe not. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court today ordered a lower court to reconsider its earlier decision upholding the law, instructing it to consider whether the state is actually capable of getting voters the photo IDs the law prescribes.

Not sure yet exactly what this means for November, but at least there's hope that this blatant attempt at voter suppression might be squelched.

Wait. So your headline is exactly accurate?

Can we please be more careful with the headlines? The law isn't vacated, what's vacated is the ruling that denied a preliminary injunction against enforcing the law.

Exaggeration and hyperbole in headline writing is the province of propaganda organizations. Leave that to Fox, eh? :)

I wish some super-PAC would run ads, aimed specifically at Republicans in GOP-governed states, asking them if they are proud to belong to the party of voter suppression.

While the vast majority of Republicans think it's fine to cheat if it helps you win (is there another explanation?), it might at least sway some tiny portion of the GOP that actually believes in our democracy.

@3, oh. Thanks. I've got to remember to always read Goldy carefully.

I second @3. I thought the court had thrown out the law when I read the headline.

Actually, that's not what happened. They didn't vacate anything today. They returned it to the lower court for more study on the implementation details. The two dissenters (out of 6) were ready to vacate it without further study. Wishing does not make it so.

So, are we going to fix this factually inaccurate headline?
