Portland Will Be Fluoridated! (In 2014. Maybe.)

Posted by on Wed, Sep 12, 2012 at 2:04 PM

As approved by Slog this morning, Portland elected officials today moved to fluoridate their city's water—two years from now. Also, the fluoridation implementation could be quickly reversed by Portland voters:

The ordinance approved Wednesday morning calls for the city water to be fluoridated by March 2014... Opponents of public fluoridation say it's unsafe and violates an individual's right to consent to medication. They also add that council members rushed into action without a public vote, and they plan to collect signatures to force a referendum in May 2014.

Huge trove of Slog wisdom on the subject here.

I only drink rainwater or pure grain alcohol.

I won't allow the International Communist Conspiracy to sap my precious bodily fluids.

How can major metropolitan regions in industrialized nations not be flouridating their water?

@4: They don't trust each other to operate a gas pump either. But they're worried that fluoridated water will make them retarded.

Finally, civic policy we can argue in terms of mouth-feel.

Cool, let's rehash the discussion from the earlier thread right here!

"If fluoride is so healthy, why don't they add other things that are healthy to the water, like carrots?!"

Have you listened to the Portland anti-fluoridation people on the radio? Lord. The drama! You'd think the state was eating their babies.

The West Coast is the perfect amalgam of nutcase leftwing new-ageism and nutcase rightwing anti-government paranoia. I wonder, do they teach science out here anymore?

Worse than fluorine is chlorine, used for purification. Modern municipalities are switching to ionization because of chlorine risks.

If it was unsafe there'd be tons of evidence for that by now, since most public water supplies in the US are fluoridated. Protect your precious bodily solids and let your local officials know that you support fluoridation today!
