The HBO Trailer for The Girl

Posted by on Mon, Sep 10, 2012 at 12:24 PM

Fans of film history (or fans of freaky people acting freaky) should check out this trailer for HBO's The Girl, debuting on October 20th. It's about the fucked up relationship between cinema auteur Alfred Hitchcock, and "the girl" Tippi Hedren (The Birds)—and EEEEEESH! It's really pretty fucked up. I'm gonna watch the crap out of this. You?

I love The Birds. However, has anyone else noticed that all the females in the film are completely useless, or worse, actually cause more trouble than they fix? The only exception is the old woman in the bar who knows a lot about birds. But other than her, all the other women (and the young girl) come across as useless, whimpering, troublemakers.

I haven't noticed this in other Hitchcock films (although maybe I just wasn't paying as much attention). Is it merely a sign of the times he filmed in or was he slightly misogynistic or deliberately provoking or maybe it was all just a coincidence?

@4 No, all of Hitchcock's films have absolutely pathetic heroines (North by Northwest, anyone?). It bothered me as a girl growing up, but now I just try and focus on the boys and ignore the silly women.

This trailer looks good, but I kept thinking she was talking to Truman Capote.

@6 Grace Kelly's character in Dial M for Murder was actually pretty cool and she did in two bad men.

Aw, c'mon. Let's not run down Hitch! Tippi has said that he purposefully ruined her acting career. Um, what career? As if she could act. She had no career outside of the Hitchcock films and her best work is still that Sego commercial she did. I'm thinking this may be exaggerated. Tippi's done work with abused animals which I applaud, but no one can accuse her of being understated.

If he was obsessed with anyone, it was with Grace, who was gorgeous beyond belief. Hard to believe he'd find Tippi Hedren an acceptable substitute.

And besides, I don't think Hitch was overly generous with any actor. At least, that's what I've read.

@5 - I wouldn't say all women in all of his movies, but I agree that was the normal pattern.

His daughter Patricia was great as the outspoken senator's daughter in Strangers on a Train, even if the love interest was typically subservient.

And while Kim Novak was absolutely pathetic in Vertigo, Barbara Bel Geddes played a sidekick with an actual career and quite a bit of smarts and confidence.

The phony spiritualist in Family Plot breaks the vapidity mould, too, though she does manage to put herself in peril.

My favorite female role in any Hitchcock film is the mother in North by Northwest. Man, that actress was funny. What a great role.
