Candy Corn Is Taking Over

Posted by on Mon, Sep 10, 2012 at 10:58 AM

Halloween candy has started appearing in stores and I have noticed an unsettling trend—candy corn. It's fucking everywhere! It's always been a staple of the season, but now, instead of staying where it belongs, it's invading other Halloween treats.

Last week Nabisco announced they'd be selling Candy Corn Oreos exclusively at Target, and last night I noticed these at Bartell's*:

Why has the candy industry decided candy corn was the flavor of Halloween 2012? More importantly, are you for or against this trend?

*They were also selling GREEN Cadbury Creme Eggs as Cadbury SCREME Eggs. Shudder.

I for one think non-triangle candy corn should glow in the dark and transform you into the Hulk.

100% High-Fructose Corn Sweetener, or whatever the Ministry of Truth is allowing the purveyors to call it.

In this day and age, when strawberries and red delicious apples are both available 12 months out of the year, there are only a very few fruits left that are actually seasonal: cherries, peaches, and a handful of others. I *love* the times when those fruits are in season.

Similarly, most candy is available any time you want it, but I normally only see candy corn around Halloween and Thanksgiving. Because of its relative scarcity, it's one of my favorite candies, because it's the only one that I really eat seasonally.

Wow, those white chocolate candy corn M&M's could be force-fed to prisoners as a new interrogation tactic.

I wanna see a giant candy corn baked into a cupcake. Do we know anyone who could make my dream a reality?

I prefer regular old candy corn, the old fashioned way. And get the hell off my lawn.

The most disgusting "candy" ever created.

Yes, this counts even circus peanuts.

I loved candy corn when I was a kid, but somewhere along the line I simply couldn't take them any more. Too sweet. Still, I'm kind of glad to see it maintaining some popularity. Old fashioned candies are a dying breed as our tastes become more homogenized.

"artificial and natural flavors"? What kind of natural flavor is there in white chocolate candy corn M&Ms?

@9 I was visiting my parents the other day and they asked me if I wanted any Ribbon Candies...I didn't even know they still existed!

I am heading out to Bartell's right now for green creme eggs. I'm going to buy me enough to last until next Easter. Creme Eggs aren't seasonal in Britain, they're available at least ten months of the year. I hate that they're only here for Lent.

@4,

You can usually find candy corn year round, in the same section of the candy aisle as peppermints and other hard candies. I reserve candy corn for Halloween though.

Where's the Slog Poll option for "Disgusting! But I am inexplicably, intractably compelled to stuff my face with them anyway"?

And if the M&Ms really taste like white chocolate and the candy corn thing is just a gimmick to get you to buy them as Halloween-themed candy - yummers and more power to 'em. I must investigate this further.

It is ironic that in a year when corn shortages have the beef industry feeding candy to cattle, the candy industry thinks humans need more candy corn.

@10 coconut ... what did you think "white chocolate" was?

@15,

I'm pretty much in the same category. I eat candy corn until I feel sick even though I can't really say I like them. Although the occasional candy corn on top of a Halloween cupcake is a nice touch.

I always assumed that candy corn is what you give children at Halloween to let them know you hate children.

Any excuse to have cadbury's creme eggs available in Seattle is a good one, especially because no one here likes them and I get to buy them all up for 30c apeice :)

I like candy corn, and I like white chocolate. The two of them together, however, sounds really, cloyingly sweet.

Got some for the office. Coworker comment: "I may never be the same."

Be warned, though.They don't taste like candy corn. If you're into candy-coated lard that tastes banana cotton candy and smells like fluoride rinse, you'll love 'em!

This month's issue of Food Network magazine (don't hate, it's in my office waiting room) has Alton Brown's recipe for homemade candy corn. HOMEMADE. CANDY. CORN. Isn't that like deciding to make homemade saltines?

Has anyone tried the candy-corn Oreos? Candy corn's only actual flavor (aside from sweet) is supposed to be butter, right?

I've got to say, butter-flavored Oreos sounds like something I'd try.
