Jobs Report Not So Hot

Posted by on Fri, Sep 7, 2012 at 7:48 AM

Just 96,000 jobs created last month, says the jobs report. CNN adds:

The monthly report, one of the few remaining before voters head to the polls November 6, showed the unemployment rate falling to 8.1% as more workers withdrew from the labor force. The 96,000 jobs created were also not enough to keep up with the population entering the workforce.

The only thing I really have to add is that President Obama knew the jobs report numbers before he spoke last night. Do with that information what you will.

Krugman:
The headline number came in a bit below expectations, but that’s probably just the noisiness in the data. The best hypothesis about the US economy this past year and more is that it has been steadily adding jobs at a pace roughly fast enough to keep up with but not get ahead of population growth. Today’s report was consistent with a continuation of that story. Nothing to see here.

30 straight months of private sector job growth is a trend in the right direction. And considering Republican obstruction, it's a minor miracle.

you are idiots.

job "growth" that does not keep up with the increase in population is a net job loss.

unemployment ticked down in this report because SEVERAL HUNDRED THOUSAND AMERICANS gave up looking for work.

DESPAIR

And the numbers for previous months were revised DOWNWARD

there is NO SILVER LINING in this grim report.

if you claim to see one you are an IDIOT or a LIAR......

It is almost like you can not reverse a decade of economic destruction and theft in just a few years. The president just needs to hit the magical jobs button more often.

If only Obama had not blocked all the jobs bills the republicans tried to pass we would be in a much better position.

little blue bars not withstanding, we are sinking.

and what is unique about the Obama Depression is the HUGE numbers of Americans who are Dropping Out of the labor force.

HOPE HAS BECOME DESPAIR.

Since Mitt Romney would need a literal miracle/voter fraud on a level unheard of in the western hemisphere (and we shouldn't discount that possibility) I think Obama will be just fine.

Once he's re-elected, I'll go back to writing my angry letters to him.

@10: So far DOUG. has put up some numbers demonstrating his point. You've said a bunch of things without even trying to back them up. Objectively speaking, you're losing this one.

I'm not understanding this story. Unemployment rate fell from 8.3% to 8.1%. That's a percentage of total employable, which means it factors in population increase. A greater percentage of people have jobs at 8.1% unemployment than they did at 8.3% unemployment.

How can that possibly fit with "The 96,000 jobs created were also not enough to keep up with the population entering the workforce."

here's some homework before you begin the weekend:

how many jobs does the US economy have to add
each month
just to keep up with population growth?
(round to the nearest thousand)
Posted by hint. its more than 96,000 on September 7, 2012 at 10:07 AM

its a percentage of people looking for work.
300,000 quit in the same month.

look up the labor dept statistic called U6 for a better look at how the job situation is.
Posted by U6=15% on September 7, 2012 at 10:09 AM
Theodore Gorath 22
@20:

A Feb. 2012 study concluded that 75% of job dropouts per month are due to age/retirement. 10,000 baby boomers turn 65 per day now. How many days in a month? About 30.

Of course, they all do not retire at 65. Guess what happens in August? Hundreds of thousands go back to school full time and stop looking for work/working full time.

Also, that U6 stat counts people who are employed part-time or "marginally employed." Those people are a large percentage, and certainly not labor force dropouts or unemployed.

Not that you care about facts or truth, I just though I would finish up my homework early this weekend.

DNC highlight reel ----

1- Clinton making the case that:
Obama hasn't gotten the job done-not even close- but, hey!- even a demigod like me couldn't have done it.....(plus reminding everyone how much they miss Bill and what a limp noodle Obama is)

2- The vicious snarling angry rank and file Democraps rejecting God and Jerusalem (with the yummy icing of the total fiasco hamfisted clumsy way in which it was handled, managing to Piss Off and Disgust, literally, every band on the ideological spectrum- the Godless Heathens know they had the votes to defeat the measure but were screwed over and ignored and humiliated and Godfearing Real America not at all fooled by the cosmetic repair to the platform.)
Priceless.........

3- Obama's limp speech, confirming the impression of inadequacy created by Bill's boffo performance and hinting at the job numbers to come....

4- the truly frighteningly GRIM job numbers that rushed in before the hangovers were even gone mocking the Democraps party.

damn. You couldn't make up stuff this good.......
