DNC Closes Out with Anti-Choice, Anti-Gay Prayer

Posted by on Thu, Sep 6, 2012 at 10:08 PM

I hate to sink the levity of the Democratic National Convention, because it was an uplifting revival and all, but in the words of this fellow on Twitter, the finale was "kind of like tossing a turd into a punchbowl."

Democrats selected Cardinal Timothy Dolan—president of the brazenly right-wing United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, which is essentially the American Vatican—to deliver a closing prayer, an opportunity that he used to oppose contraception and marriage equality.

"We ask your benediction on those waiting to be born, that they may be welcomed and protected," Dolan told the Time Warner Cable Arena immediately after Obama's speech, adding that the crowd seek "the courage to defend... life." (The full text is here.) He went on to take a thinly veiled swipe at same-sex marriage: "Show us anew that happiness is found only in respecting the laws of nature and of nature's God. Empower us with Your grace so that we might resist the temptation to replace the moral law with idols of our own making, or to remake those institutions You've given us for the nurturing of life and community."

The DNC was wonderful, but this was seriously fucked up. Dolan's "prayer" was the opposite of everything this convention was purportedly about.

Nearly every speech for three days hammered on women's right to choose, the need for women to have access to contraception and reproductive health care, and for gay men and women to marry the people they love.

It's not like Dolan slipped this in. It's not as though he pulled something over on the Democrats. The DNC organizers had to know full well what Dolan believes and what he might say when they invited him (his speech tonight was similar to one he gave at the RNC).

Running the US bishops since 2010, Dolan has howled at the president for supporting same-sex marriage. Dolan threw a fit to demand that all businesses could deny women's health-care coverage for contraception. Under Dolan, the bishops have steered the church's efforts to overturn same-sex marriage in Washington State. While the list could go on and on, under Dolan, the US bishops and Vatican are also forcing US sisters and nuns to drop their focus on the poor and "feminist themes" and instead adopt anti-gay, anti-choice politicking.

Dolan represents—and his speech was an example of—the same divisive, hateful rhetoric that Dems claimed to denounce all week. And, yeah, you could say they're just pandering to a moderate Catholic middle. But, by that thinking, you could also say those other speeches were just pandering to gays and women. But that's all speculation. Here's what's not: The Democrats brought a bigot to give a bigoted speech at their convention. They could have picked someone just as religious and far more virtuous.

As long as the Catholic Church in America is run by a divisive politician like Dolan, he doesn't deserve a platform to claim moral authority. And God knows, in 2012, the Democrats should be the last people to give it to him.

The Dems seem to have a tradition of having the opposition offer prayers at events... Rick Warren, anyone?

I mean, WTF.

@1 Bingo. Having Rick Warren giving one of the prayers for the Inauguration pretty much guaranteed I would never be giving money to Obama again. I don't know what was worse, that they were pandering to the Right or that they thought Warren was an example of a good Christian. Every time I start to say to myself, "You know, the Democrats aren't so bad, they are really starting to solidify a vision I can get behind", they pull some shit like Dolan and I'm back to my stance that the party is a bunch of hypocrites, just like the Republicans.

@5 Whores, more like it. There are anti-gay, "pro-life" people who also consider themselves environmentalists, Medicare supporters, deficit hawks, and certainly potential Obama voters provided that they get a bone or two thrown their way. Warren in '08, Dolan tonight.

Now, whether those people will actually vote and make any kind of difference is potentially doubtful. And it pisses the rest of us off on top of that.

The Dems will ignore Dolan, so this empty pander has great poltical value, since offering traditional Catholics a seat at the table deflects the anti-religion arguments that actually have traction against Obama in swing states like OH and PA. It will play well with centrist Catholic Dems like my parents are on the fence because the GOP propaganda made an impact on many back in the spring when birth control allegedly forced by Obamacare was the front page story. Remember, the Dems gave that awesome nun a prime time speaking slot during the DNC. That she got to speak during the actual convention, and Dolan got to briefly vent during the closing credits is very indicative of how the Dems really stand.

Is this as bad as pandering to prosecutors to win voters by imposing a DUI law not clearly associated with intoxication level? Hmmm....

Dom, it no doubt comes as a complete shock to you, but not every Democrat is joyous about abortion on demand. Most favor the right to safe and legal abortion, but celebrate life, and want that life to be "welcomed and protected." And most favor the rights of gays and lesbians to marry, and celebrate that as "respecting the laws of nature and of nature's God."

You take offense at thinly veiled swipes; I say you're awfully damned thin-skinned.

I know you need to sell papers, but instead of constantly being a confrontational asshole, you might consider the common ground that Democrats have with other Americans. After all, that's how we win elections (outside the 43rd District).

LOL!!!!! And you guys really think things are going to get better? The GOP is insane and the Democrats are spineless cowards who at BEST can put out great sounding speeches.

So enjoy the next four years: Obama will gut Social Security and Medicare (it's time for compromise right?) for anyone under 50 years of age, give more to the banks and Wall Street, appoint another attorney from a too big to fail (insert industry of choice) and remember this fact: He is the better of the two candidates. And I'm not kidding, he IS the better choice: sad when you think about it.

We are all fucked and that's what being part of a dying empire is all about. Enjoy the collapse that will be accompanied not by falling scenery but burning scenery.

So one of the men in a dress got up and said a prayer. Meh. I'm about as anti-religion as they come, but these people who clutch their pearls and screech every time a member of the clergy says something make me tired.

Religion is always going to be around, and unfortunately, it's going to be part of politics. Dolan agreed to speak at the RNC, then got a lot a crap for it from Catholics, so the DNC gave him this gig to cover his ass. It isn't elegant theology, or an appeal for bi-partisanship, just a good old-fashioned CYA.

What I find much more interesting is that despite all the yammering about how conservative a nation we are (ask any troll) these preacher/politicians find it desirable to be seen with the godless social liberals from time to time.

That would be great progress, Canadian Nurse. Last night brought a bit of news that I think also shows real progress from another angle. Posted up by NYT about the same time the viper Dolan began to speak - criminal law has finally been applied to the Kansas City bishop who shielded a pedophile priest. The bishop's sentence was light, but we finally got one of the Catholic muckity mucks:
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Roman Catholic bishop was found guilty on Thursday of failing to report suspected child abuse, becoming the first American bishop in the decades-long sexual abuse scandal to be convicted of shielding a pedophile priest.
In a hastily announced bench trial that lasted a little over an hour, a judge found the bishop, Robert W. Finn, guilty on one misdemeanor charge and not guilty on a second charge, for failing to report a priest who had taken hundreds of pornographic pictures of young girls. The counts each carried a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $1,000 fine, but Bishop Finn was sentenced to two years of court-supervised probation.
The verdict is a watershed moment in the priest sexual abuse scandal that has plagued the church since the 1980s. Bishops have been eager to turn the page on this era and have put in place extensive abuse prevention policies, which include reporting suspected abusers to law enforcement authorities. But the Kansas City case has served as a wake-up call to Catholics that the policies cannot be effective if the bishops do not follow them.

Dolan's speech was a big let down, after three nights of not conceding to and often poking a stick at the right's crazy haters. The best way for Democrats to win this year is to make the haters show their true selves, so moderates can't ignore what the Republican Party has become.

The young evangelical woman who gave the benediction after Michelle, maybe isn't gungho about gay rights or reproductive choice either. (But who knows? there are some genuinely progressive evangelicals) However she talked about working in Africa to provide healthcare and food to people with HIV and cited scriptures about serving the needy. She isn't a person who uses her religion to justify hate and insanity.

OTOH, this could have been a calculated risk by the DNC to slyly show the American public that, if they vote RR, they're going to get twice the crazy.

Yeah, it's basically ceding the ground of religion to the crazies. I grew up around lots of deeply religious people and not one of them was an anti-choice homophobe.

Also, it wouldn't have been so bad if his prayer had mentioned other things. Like there are a lot of Catholics who are super anti-choice but have good things to say about poverty, for instance. And I'm totally down with working with those priests and bishops and what have you on issues of poverty. That's what reaching across the aisle should be about - finding common points of agreement, not capitulating to every damn whim of your enemy.

The dems didn't actually "select" the Cardinal. Originally, he offered to do the benediction, and they turned him down. Then, the Cardinal agreed to do the GOP benediction, and the dems caved to pressure to have the Cardinal at their convention as well. Still, not an awesome moment for the dems, but caving into conservative pressure isn't anything new for them.

I don't know, but part of me thinks this was actually another bit of brilliance by the DNC. I mean, think about it: in one fell swoop, they've basically taken away the GOP's "Democrats are all Godless heathens who want to kill babies and let teh Gays marry" talking points.

Now, the next time it comes up, all Obama (or Biden or whomever) needs to do is to point to Dolan's appearance as evidence that, unlike the GOP, the Democratic Party is big enough and open enough to incorporate ALL points-of-view, even those for which many of the rank-and-file vehemently disagree.

The Democrats are showing that "diversity" actually means something to them, that it's not just an empty platitude, and that they're mature enough to acknowledge that not everyone in the Party is going to agree on every issue; unlike the tea-bagger dominated GOP where everyone must march in lock-step to the same narrow, inflexible set of beliefs and practices.

Can you imagine Romney or Ryan trying to finagle their way through THAT?

@39 - I'm not interested in "glorifying" any behaviors. I don't expect the state, through any means, to make value judgments; I empower it only to make practical decisions. I morally oppose incest, but I see little utility in proscribing it (there's no indication that such proscription actually limits its occurrence in any meaningful way). I'm not exactly thrilled by the idea of consuming or in any way engaging with feces, but I'm not convinced that should be a matter for the state to deal with, either. Cannibalism? Not for it, but if you didn't actually murder anyone to acquire that meat, I feel the same way I feel about it as I do about necrophilia--morally and physically repulsed, but unwilling to assert any legal authority regarding the matter, except insofar as the loved ones of the deceased have say over how the body is treated and have recourse under civil law for any violations of their preferences or anything stated in the will.

Gang rape, by definition, involves a non-consenting party forced to participate in an act; victimhood is easily established.

What I fail to understand is the self-deception that people who aren't a party to the behavior in question fabricate to be against behavior between/amongst willing people that has no direct effect on the public. The first self-deception is that the Controllers have is that their belief is directly enfranchised from nature or god. The second self-deception is that if the behavior of the people they are condemning is allowed to happen, all of human society will disintegrate. What a coverup for plain old avarice. Jealousy that they aren't invited. How many dumb catholics does this planet need before the supporting ecology collapses from the sheer numbers of the multitudes. If they find these people so disgusting, look in some other direction. There are always people who want some one else to tell them what to do. Now that Adam and Eve have discovered there's more ways to skin a cat than the missionary position, what are they going to do with that. I know, charge the parishioners to have installed a bedroom monitor in place of the picture of the VIRGIN mother. IF they start coloring outside the lines, reprogrammed sister nuns will burst into the bedroom and whack at the offending organs with rulers.

I mean that I find dog poop on the sidewalk disgusting and could even make an argument about how unnatural it is, stand there, and shout and scream for others to come stare at it with me and feel morally justified that I have protested such a thing. Instead, I walk around or step over the offending manifestation and go on my way.

If June and Julie want to have a group toss and tumble with George, who's business is it other than theirs? Except Bishop Fpharayttphace, who is most likely just plain jealous he wasn't invited to watch and participate. Or, like Hitler, his genitals aren't what they should be, so he hates the human race and wants to make life as miserable as possible for everybody.

About Julie, June and George, yes, I am jealous that I am not invited, but I'll keep it to myself and learn to live with it. As for Adam and Eve, you're probably boring in bed together, but I will consent to watch if invited. Hold the door so the nuns can't bust in. Take that dog turd and jam it in the camera lens.

@51 Many people in the U.S. are inspired to do good by their various religions. You're perfectly free to think of it as knocking on wood or crossing one's fingers for luck if you like. If you don't, then remember that you don't have to join in; you're not a schoolchild who's not allowed to leave the building.

Over 70% of the U.S. self-identifies as Christian. That doesn't even count all the other religions. A prayer for focus and victory is something that most people will appreciate. If you want to go vegetarian, that's your business, but it's no insult to you if meat is served at the banquet.
