BREAKING NEWS: Mitt Romney Makes Joke

Posted by on Fri, Aug 24, 2012 at 10:46 AM

Unfortunately, the joke was not funny. And it was a joke about Obama's birth certificate:

Mitt Romney made a joke about his birth certificate at a rally in Commerce, Mich. on Friday.

Speaking about his Michigan roots, he said, "No one's ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised."

The audience reportedly loved the joke. Rush Limbaugh thought it was great. Between this and the Paul Ryan pick, I think if Romney keeps going in this direction, he's got the crazy teabagger vote in the bag, you guys. That's at least six percent of the population that Obama's not going to win.

If nobody has ever asked to see Mitt's birth certificate, does that mean he has no legal U.S. passport?

what a douche.

@1 it's not about drying dissuade those 6% but instead turn that 6% that will never possibly vote for Obama into 8 or 10% that will never vote for him by giving legitimacy to this nonsense.

Yet Mitt Romney's dad, who ran for president in the 60's, was born in Mexico.

And the last Republican nominee, John McCain, was born in Panama.

For SOME REASON *wink*, tea partiers don't care about that, though.

Dick move Mitt. That was bad. Really bad. The worst part about it is that you didn't realize how bad it is before you said it; not to mention these ramifications could painfully upstage the convention next week at your primer opportunity to convey your vision to the American voter.

Aw, what the hell, I'll bite. Mitt, where's your birth certificate? I want to see it. No, not a certified copy, the *long-form* *original* one.

Where's the birth certificate, Mitt? What are you hiding in there, eh?

It's funny because the people who are laughing at it are the butt of the joke but they are too fucking dumb to realize it. It's also funny because the sitting President has had to endure four years of having his legitimacy challenged not for anything he has said or done, but because he is not 100% white. Ha... Ha?

And yet you have defended such behavior by birthers on these very forums in the past.

@11 I think of you as more of a cranky reality based voter. Not Romney's target. He's drumming up heart and gut voters, those motivated by fear and belief systems. The national journal had a piece yesterday, running the point that Romney need 61% of the white vote to win.

http://nationaljournal.com/columns/polit…

@17 This was scripted and planned. This isn't about vision, Hate and fear is the platform your man has decided to run on. Vote against those that scare you. Can you really vote for him when you know that a fair percentage of your fellow voters wish you ill?

Take another look @25...@17 didn't say it was *wrong* or *incorrect* to say this, just that it was "bad". Y'know, birthers think it's ok for Mitt et al to *believe* this stuff and run on this stuff and say it in private, but he can't say it out loud where those people (we know who we are) might hear it.

@17's concern appears to be that it will "upstage" Mitt's message at the convention next week. Well, I'm sure this is exactly the message a lot of these shithead birthers want to hear. Maybe they'll have Donald Trump, Jerome Corsi, and Orly Taitz give primetime speeches between hurricanes.

@29 I have it on good authority (that I just made up) that Mitt doesn't have a birth certificate, he has a warranty from the factory.

@28 If Romney continues to draw fewer Latinos and African-American voters than McCain, he'd probably need an even larger share of the white vote. And given the real possibility of an increase in the gender gap between Obama and Romney that might not be possible any more.

@17 No, you just don't get it! See, it's funny because Obama is *black*!!! Isn't that hysterical?!

He's a black person who thinks he can be president, but real Americans understand that only white men can be president. If Obama is in the White House, then something naturally must be wrong, like he wasn't born here or something.

Geez, why do I have to explain this to you? Are you some goddamn socialist or something?

Yep! That's what wrong with GDfR's brand of uninformed trolling.
He cannot claim that it was NOT racist when others were saying it and now claim that it is BAD for Romney to say.

If it wasn't racist, why would it be bad?
If it is bad now, but not racist then, how is it "bad"?

GDfR is just someone who's life is so bad that he has to try for human interaction by trolling these forums. And he can't even put the effort into learning the facts enough to troll effectively.

I don't even get how this qualifies as a "joke" honestly. It's more like an underhanded topical comment. Wouldn't a joke need to incorporate a clever play on words or some sort of a non-sequitorial statement or progression? I mean, I guess it's sort of a "dig" or something and could be an effective rallying point (assuming the rally target are utter morons, of course) but there's really not anything funny about it by any objective measure of humor.

What an asshole.

@32 If we were to get the same high turnout of 2008 which seems hard to pull off. Obama's problem is getting enough voters to turn out, he's kicking ass with unlikely voters. But that won't mean anything if they don't vote.

@34 Go watch the video again. It was said on purpose. And you're right, it is very wrong for him to be saying this.

@40 Turnout will be key, but I believe most polls have now switched to likely voter from the earlier registered voter model. And in those models, Obama is still performing very well with women, Latinos, and African-Americans.

I think this was rather clever of Romney given yesterday's internet dump of some of his Bain holdings and the response to his latest its against my religion excuse to release my tax returns.

It is a very smooth misdirection away from an issue that could truly hurt him, his taxes and finances, to an issue that will do no damage to him at all.

Note, GDfR supports Romney because he buys into the myth that the GOP is the party of fiscal responsibility. The last 50 years of data shows the GOP to be remarkably irresponsible with the nation's finances but the myth lives on. The Very Silly Party is really good at ignoring facts and evidence.

Ah, here it is, the "Governor Romney didn't say what you just heard him say" retcon:

“The governor has always said, and has repeatedly said, he believes the president was born here in the United States,” said Kevin Madden, an adviser to Mr. Romney, who served as governor of Massachusetts. “He was only referencing that Michigan, where he is campaigning today, is the state where he himself was born and raised.”

I didn't think Romney could stick his any farther in his mouth, I was wrong. Latest Romney comment on his joke:

“Well we’re in Michigan and Ann I and I were both born in Detroit and of course a little humor always goes a long way. So it was great to be home, to be in a place where Ann and I had grown up, and the crowd loved it and got a good laugh.”

Basically, I was having fun and the crowd loved it, so, no big deal.

"Romney's greatest weakness was a lack of foreign policy expertise and a need for a clear position on the Vietnam War. The press coverage of the trip focused on Vietnam and reporters were frustrated by Romney's initial reluctance to speak about it. The qualities that helped Romney as an industry executive worked against him as a presidential candidate; he had difficulty being articulate, often speaking at length and too forthrightly on a topic and then later correcting himself while maintaining he was not. Reporter Jack Germond joked that he was going to add a single key on his typewriter that would print, "Romney later explained...."

This is from the Wikipedia article about Willard's dad, George.

I think that's fun.
