A Human Giant Writes From the Heart About the Poaching of Giant Land Mammals

Posted by on Fri, Aug 24, 2012 at 8:13 AM

Former Chinese NBA player Yao Ming:

Not 20 yards away, I saw the body of an elephant poached for its ivory three weeks ago. Its face had been cut off by poachers and its body scavenged by hyenas, scattering bones around the area. A sad mass of skin and bone. The smell was overwhelming and seemed to cling to us, even after we left.

I really was speechless. After seeing these animals up close and watching them interact in loving and protective family groups, it was heart wrenching and deeply depressing to see this one cruelly taken before its time.

The giant has giant emotions.

I thought it was pretty cool when Yao came out against shark's fin soup. I wish the ad campaign that used his image had continued.

Good Morning Charles,
Good on Yao Ming. I, too have viewed African elephants in their habitat. They are most gentle and protective creatures. When I saw them at a National Park in Northern Cameroon on safari, one cow of the herd nearly charged us. One of our entourage got a little too close photographing her calf. I remember her ears wildly flapping just before the attempted charge.
