PopCap Laying Off Employees Today

Posted by on Tue, Aug 21, 2012 at 11:50 AM

A little more than a year ago, local video game maker PopCap sold to EA for as much as 1.3 billion dollars. Now, rumors are spreading that PopCap has been discreetly "letting people go for several months." Twitterers are saying that PopCap's remote offices in Dublin and Shanghai may have been shut down, and that "50ish" people have been laid off in Seattle. We'll keep you posted right here on Slog; if you know anything about these layoffs, please send us a tip.

UPDATE 12:50 PM: Just heard from a Seattle Popcap employee who was laid off this morning. It's definitely not a rumor.

Sure am glad I didn't take THAT job! Sucks for the devs at PopCap that are losing their jobs, but this is EA's typical MO; they should've seen this coming when they sold out.

They're only following Zynga down the tubes.

But with first console and then PC tanking, now casual, there's still mobile, I guess.

Or else we need a new form of fun.

Their real problem is that when three of their employees in matching-colored shirts stand near eachother, they all mysteriously vanish.

@2 Tanking is a strong word.

Games aren't doing as good as they were when the latest generation of consoles was released, but they aren't dying.

Casual games is going through an adjustment period, in my opinion. Just like every new and exciting thing that blows up huge, everyone jumps in head-first without knowing exactly what they're doing and eventually the "bubble" bursts so-to-speak.

Video games certainly aren't going away any time soon.

The concept of outplacement hits a new low:
...PopCap's head of social media Jeff Green confirmed the layoffs in a tweet, asking the gaming community to "hire my PopCap friends!"
