Obama on Akin Comments: "Rape is rape."

Posted by on Mon, Aug 20, 2012 at 10:41 AM

At a press conference livestreaming over at Politico right now, President Obama is taking a number of questions, including a few about Todd Akin's comments. Here's ThinkProgress's account:

Obama said, “The views expressed were offensive. Rape is rape. And the idea that we should be parsing and qualifying and slicing what types of rape we’re talking about doesn’t make sense to the American people.” “So what I think these comments do underscore is why we shouldn’t have a bunch of politicians a majority whom are men making health care decisions on behalf of women.”

That last sentence deserves to be engraved in the entrance to the Capitol building.

Well look at that! An intelligent adult talking. How refreshing...

Akin is on the House Committee on Science. This is the Republican position on science: IT ALL BULLSHIT, I GOT A EMAIL.

GOP: "The degree of rape depends upon the sluttiness of the slut that was (or was not) raped."

And by that I mean Akin.

I object less to the moralistic parsing of types of rape (though it's pathetic) so much as the invention of scientific facts and illusory authorities ("from what I understand from doctors...") to justify the moralistic parsing.

I'm not saying Obama is obligated to say sometimes a blastula isn't a baby, but I'd like it if he'd said this jackass doesn't seem to have a fucking clue about biology and isn't qualified to run for dogcatcher.

That last sentence needs to be shot and put out of our misery. Shot with commas, that is. "So what I think these comments do underscore is why we shouldn’t have a bunch of politicians, a majority whom are men, making health care decisions on behalf of women.”

I'm just going to take a minute to be depressed at the thought that there's actually still a need for the president to say something like "rape is rape", because apparently this is still unclear to some of us.

Gah. Akin is on the House Committee on Science?!? Seriously? Okay, yeah, I know some backwater rubes are that clueless, but who thought it was a good idea to put this moron on a Science committee? The stupidity alone should make little baby jesus cry.

I wish he'd said something about Akin being *wrong*, not merely offensive.
