To-Do List for the Day of Pussy Riot's Sentencing

Posted by on Thu, Aug 16, 2012 at 12:57 PM

Filip, the Vancouver, B.C.-based art magazine, this morning sent out a clear-eyed reminder about the relevance of Pussy Riot:

It is important here to highlight why these women are incarcerated and why we stand with them. As culture workers, they have facilitated a relationship to the everyday and reconsidered the world around them and their place within it. And so will we. As culture workers, they have created a space for open and vigorous questioning despite the lack thereof within their immediate environment. And so will we. As culture workers, they have sought to dissolve hierarchy in favor of movement, voice, and vision. And so will we. As culture workers, they have moved towards enriching the landscape where our collective, civic voice can move, grow, debate, and generate a desire and belief in the right to individual autonomy and equality regardless of difference. And so will we.

The first thing you can do to support Pussy Riot on the eve of their sentencing in Russian court—the sentencing is set for tomorrow at noon our time—is to get educated about them. Read Emily Nokes's piece in this week's paper here.

The second thing you can do is to take a little action. Rallies are planned in at least a dozen cities. Seattle isn't one of them (yet), and maybe organizing an entire rally is too much for you.

So here's what you do: Stay tuned. Consider donating to the legal defense fund here. Oh, and go down on a woman tomorrow.

Go down on a woman tomorrow? What?

Um. I fail to see how "going down on a woman" has anything to do with Pussy Riot or their cause. Seems like a weak way to end an article about a pretty powerful issue. That said, I fully support the idea. It certainly couldn't hurt anything.

Go down on a woman? Really? Can I just give her some makeup/hair/fashion advice instead? I don't want to have to give up my gay card...not even for Pussy Riot.

A Pussy Riot/Pink Block is planned for this event on Sunday. Everyone should come out.

@4,

How about just committing sodomy of any kind?

What a stupid way to end a post about an important subject.

Ok, so I’m late to the Pussy Riot following, trial, and legitimate worldwide outrage. But, a non-descript facebook group and scheduled discussions, with no real call to local action, when we actually have offices for the Consulate General of Russia [600 University Street, (One Union Square) Ste., 2510] and the Russian Embassy/Consulate [2001 – 6th Avenue (Westin Building), Suite 2323)] right here in Seattle?! Sure, Seattle wrings its hands forever and waffles over formal civic decisions and process, but I’ve never seen it so hesitant to throw some markers to poster board, stand outside of a building en masse, and voice opposition to something so egregious – especially in solidarity with so many other cities in the world. Is this town’s inertia really that bad?

I'll hug a few women, but going down on them is pretty much out of the question. I don't think it would really help the situation.
