Wired to Continue Publishing Jonah Lehrer

Posted by on Wed, Aug 15, 2012 at 2:01 PM

Jonah Lehrer resigned from the New Yorker in disgrace. His bestselling book was so journalistically flimsy that it's been yanked out of print. But the old boys' network keeps chugging along, even as the magazine industry declines at an appalling rate:

The new scandal "does not diminish his work as a valued contributor to the magazine and website," said [Wired spokesman Jon] Hammond, who added that Lehrer's continuing contract with Wired, a Conde Nast sibling of the New Yorker, meant that "a couple of pieces that were already in the works."

"We still value the work that he has done for us," Hammond said.

Sure. Why not? It's not like there are thousands of out-of-work journalists out there dying for a shot at the kind of career Lehrer threw away, right?

But.... we KNOW Jonah Lehrer! He's familiar! He's our friend! We love him! Why would we want to try out someone untested when we can just keep lazily going with what we know?

(caveat - a return to the days of pulp print and penny dreadfuls is actually a return to the norm, not a change per se, but I just wanted to whack you on your soft puppy nose with a rolled up newspaper ...)

Is it true the book was journalistically flimsy? The articles you linked, as I remember, only talk about the Dylan chapter, which is quite a bit different than an entire book.
