Trailer for Martin McDonagh's Seven Psychopaths

Posted by on Wed, Aug 15, 2012 at 1:51 PM

My introduction to Martin McDonagh came via his 2008 film In Bruges, a film I liked but didn't love. Luckily, though, I liked it enough to seek out more of McDonagh's stuff—at which point I found his plays, a few of which have been put on by Portland theater companies. A Skull in Connemara, The Pillowman, The Lieutenant of Inishmore, The Beauty Queen of Leenane, and more or less everything else I've read and seen of McDonagh's has been more or less excellent. Aside from Mamet, there's exactly one playwright whose work I actively seek out, and it's McDonagh. Which means now I'm stoked about his new movie, too—partly just because regardless of what it is, I'd be curious to see what he does, and mostly because Seven Psychopaths looks pretty great.

Martin and John Michael ("The Guard") are sibling miracles. That this one's set in LA makes it super dreamy.

Love The Pillowman immensely. Wish they'd put some of that Irish shit on somewhere in Scotland for once...

I like how the two women are described as "the hot girlfriend" and "the passive-agressive girlfriend", and neither is credited with the other five male actors. Classy!

@ 3, they're all named on the poster. Just in case that makes you feel better.

This looks like it could be the greatest movie of all time. ALL TIME!

Bottle Rocket meets Reservoir Dogs?

"Put your hands up."

"Nooo."

"But I have a gun."

"I don't care."

"But that doesn't make any sense!"

"Too bad!"

Love. It.

But I also loved In Bruges. I actually visited Bruges only a few years before seeing that movie, and that made little bits of it funnier.

Christopher Walken is a treasure, and casting him in a movie like this is genius. McDonagh managed to pull a good performance out of Colin Farell in In Bruges, which is not easy. I will definitely see this movie. Without fail.

Erik, there has also been a good showing of McDonagh here in Seattle. ACT did Lieutenant of Inishmore in 2010, The Pillowman in 2006 and A Skull in Connemara in 2000. The Rep did Beauty Queen of Leenane in 1999. And there are several companies with plans for Pillowman and A Behanding in Spokane (yes, that spokane) in the next year or so. McDonagh is always worth keeping an eye out for, and far less predictable (and repetitive) than Mamet.

McDonagh gives off a Irish Tarantino vibe. I hope the film is a bit more original than that.

Lieutenant of Inishmore was about a psychopath avenging the death of his cat.

@ 9, the things McDonagh and Tarantino share in common are that they can write great dialogue. Outside that and typically telling stories about criminals and gangsters, they're not similar at all.

When I saw the title for this film, I thought "Oh, what a brilliant idea, an intelligent film about 7 very different people who live different lives, but all are psychopaths." I'm disappointed I guessed wrong.

"A Behanding in Spokane" was probably the best play I saw when I lived in New York. Definitely the funniest.
