This autotune thing is just creepy—celebrate Julia Child's birthday with some of her very best lines over here and/or watch this:

Among the things I'd never have thought I'd see, a Julia Child montage set to GNR.

And, just so we don't get too warm and fuzzy, let me put this here as a reminder that all that glitters is not gold.

@3 - WHAT? Are you telling me a very old woman had different ideology than mine? You've got to be fucking kidding me!

@4 Just pointing out that she wasn't a saint and had some nasty faults, just as I'm sure that somewhere you have some positive traits too.

Anyway, pointing out that a woman who would be 100 today had very standard-for-her-day views on sexuality is about as pointless as pointing out that some of the founding fathers had slaves.

There were several things with which Julia and I were in conflict. Her defense of the veal industry was one, but I forgave her because she was of her time. Certain animals were to be eaten.

I will always be totally in love with her though. I admired her spirit of adventure and her boundless energy - even in her late 80s. I'm dancing with 60 and sometimes feel 300. How did she ever do in her later years what I barely did when I was a youngster?

She also changed the American kitchen forever, and she was never a snob about food even though some of her followers were. She was just as happy cooking out of a well-performing $7 pan as she was cooking out of the priciest good ones.

In the two times I met her, my impression was that even with her erudite down-to-Earthiness, she had an remarkable intelligence and sophistication which made her TV shows interesting to watch even if you didn't like to cook. She could clown around with her elegance.

I grieved when she passed comforted in the fact that she'd had a long, successful (for the most part), interesting life. Maybe if Heaven existed, she could be with Paul again. They were some team.

Happy Birthday, my dear Julia.

@UNPAID and Mac: But the thing is, she came around! Unlike many people of her era, or even this one. To me, that's huge.

one of my prized possessions is an empty caper bottle that a friend sent me when he lived in cambridge...inside it he had put a note that he wrote to me informing me that he had retrieved the bottle from julia's recycling bin. i LOVE showing it to people. pretty cheap capers too (price tag still on the bottom of the bottle)
