M's Felix Hernandez' Perfect Game*!

Posted by on Wed, Aug 15, 2012 at 3:16 PM

As Anthony notes below, mass props are due to Mariner Felix Hernandez! YES!!! In honor, you must watch this if you haven't seen it yet:

I was the catcher in an intramural college championship softball game under, um, similar circumstances (hi Mom!). My oh my, was that a looooooong game. But we won!

*Thank you, commenter Gern Blanston; my understanding is primitive. AAAAANNNNNDDDD, changed because David from Chicago asked so nicely.

This one goes out to Ben.

Not just a no-hitter, a perfect game! No one for Tampa reached base. Only 23 players have thrown a perfect game in the history of major league baseball. King Felix was amazing!

Yes, please, a no-hitter is very different than a perfect game. Not to take anything away from Doc Ellis, but a perfect game is much, much more difficult.

By definition a perfect game is a no-hitter (but of course not every no-hitter is a perfect game). So you should lose the no-hitter part completely; just "perfect game."

@7 - If a perfect game is only defined by no one getting to base, wouldn't it be possible to catch a fly ball, thereby denying that advance to base without scoring a no-hitter?

@8 It isn't scored as a 'hit' if the ball is caught or you are thrown out.

@9 - Yeah, I just had to click around Wikipedia forever to find that. Do sports people enjoy using words however they damn well please?

Nice work Felix! Kind of funny how it came only a couple days after this Deadspin article, "Felix Hernandez, The Big-Game Pitcher Who’s Never Pitched In A Big Game".

Can anyone point me to actual footage from Doc Ellis' no-hitter? I suspect MLB has that locked away never to be seen. But I'd love to see video of that game.

@7, I second the motion.

@8, a "hit" in baseball means the batter put the ball in play and reached base without a fielder committing an error or choosing to make an out elsewhere on the field. Making contact with the ball and grounding or flying out is not a hit. So, 27 consecutive ground/fly/strike-outs = 1 perfect game.

The M's pretty much suck this year, but there have been some damn entertaining moments. I'm expecting a Montero four-homer game before this season is over.

Bethany, please, please, please change the headline to just "perfect game." As was pointed out above, a perfect game is, without needing to say, a no hitter. It's incredibly rare and a great achievement.

@ 8, to make things more confusing, it's not a hit when a guy puts the ball in play and a fielder decides to throw out another baserunner instead of the batter. That's a "fielder's choice," not a hit.

Or if a guy hits the ball right at a fielder (say, the shortstop or third baseman) and the guy throws the ball over the first baseman's head, that's not a hit either. That's an error.

There are lots of ways to hit the ball into fair territory, reach base safely, but not have it credited as a "hit."

@8 in a perfect game, 27 are up and 27 are down and no one reaches base safely. That last point is the key. The pitcher can strike a batter out swinging and the catcher drops the ball. If the hitter then runs to first before he is tagged or the catcher throws to first after he gets there, he is safe. It's not a hit but the perfect game would be broken up. If a fielder makes an error and a batter reaches base, the no hitter is intact but not the perfect game.

That was a great game. Listened on radio at work, and was pacing around the office I was so stressed out for Felix. Watched portions of the replay tonight, he was just sick.

Too bad Niehaus didn't make it a few more years. Would have been a treat to hear him call it.

Bethany, I don't care that it is a repost, I love this video. You could post it everyday and I would still love it.
