Steve Kardynal Wins the Internet

Posted by on Fri, Aug 10, 2012 at 8:59 AM

...with his life-enhancing Chatroulette lip-synch to (what? Still? YES) "Call Me Maybe."

Thank you Towleroad, Reddit, and Steve Kardynal.

I rarely listen to music stations on my commutes to/from work but sometimes I get tired of NPR or cds or whatever and so I'll tune in to the local pop station.

So I did that about 3 weeks ago. The first song they played was that 'call me maybe' song. It's ok. Plucky. Whatever.

In the 2 weeks total that I stayed on that station, they played that song, without fail, once every time I drove to work and once every time back. Sometimes they played it more than once - and my commute is only about 45 min. Also, any time I drove to the grocery store or anywhere, that song came on at least once. Every. Time.

I think top 40 stations just have a single mix cd with a dozen songs. Whoever starts in the morning just puts it on shuffle and repeat and they follow that routine every day. I swear I only heard maybe 15 different songs in the full two weeks I stayed on that station, but I heard each of those 15 songs at least 5 times each. I heard 'call me maybe' at least 30 times. Probably more.

Ok, rant over.

@1 & 2 Despite my punk roots over the years I've finally learned to appreciate good pop unapologetically. You got to surrendar the cynical gatekeeper when it comes to pop music. The incessant greed of the music industry might run it into the ground, but that's not the fault of pop musicians. That's what mp3's are for. You don't have listen to top 40 radio any more.

"Call me Maybe" is a great, well crafted little pop tune. And you're right - made even better by Kardynal.

@2 My cubicle neighbor has her radio tuned to one of those stations and plays that crap at the lowest volume possible for it to be just loud enough to grate on my every last nerve all day. I hear Call Me Maybe almost every hour. My sanity has been tested and tested and tested...I'm going to break any second now.

I was dubious of you awarding this guy an entire Internet, Schmader, but then I watched it and now I think maybe he deserves two Internets.

@6,
I DO like the song, I like lots of those pop tunes, which is why I occasionally tune to the top 40 station.

My rant was really more of an observation about how those radio stations function. Repeat the same songs for ever and ever and ever ad nauseum...

A little indie station might be fun to DJ, but I would go absolutely fucking insane if I had to DJ a top 40 station. It would be like Chinese water torture.

Genius! The reaction shots are pure gold. All the girls seem to be digging it. The guys are funny, especially the few without a sense of humor.

I lost track of the costume changes. Kardynal must have been doing this for weeks.

Whenever I went on Chatroulette all I got were chubby old naked dudes already stroking their cocks. How did he find so many normal clothed people?

I like how he got a couple of people that were expecting to get down on Chatroulette. Those ones are the best.

I just love that the vast majority of responses, at least that he showed in this video, were really positive and people were into it. Sure, a couple WTF responses and scowls, but this makes me happy.
