New Obama Ad Attacks Romney on Women's Issues

Posted by on Mon, Aug 6, 2012 at 2:55 PM

This is a decent ad that lands some good hits on Romney:

I'm a little surprised there isn't more about Planned Parenthood in the ad. I understand that a 30-second ad only allows for a few complete sentences, but some mention of the fact that Planned Parenthood provides breast cancer screenings, for example, might catch the ear of a few undecided voters.

Yeah, but Planned Parenthood is a dogwhistle for anti-abortion voters, and Obama's still trying to appeal to American centrists, who are strongly conservative by the standards of the rest of the world and probably poll negatively re: Planned Parenthood.

I agree with @ 1. Plus, Planned Parenthood is already mentioned 3 times in thess 30 seconds.

Considering the number of (presumably uncommitted) "progressives" who've lately been pissing on anything to do with breast cancer - not just the Komen Foundation, but ANYTHING - somehow I think avoiding that topic wasn't a bad idea.

And Paul? Mentioning Planned Parenthood three times in a 30-second spot isn't avoiding it - it's making it the entire focus of the ad. It's shorthand for abortion rights and contraceptive information. Yes, breast-cancer screening and many other things fall under their brief, but those are the two things the majority of the public are going to associate with the ad.

@1 Actually, when asked, a majority of voters support federal funding for Planned Parenthood and the organization in general http://www.rhrealitycheck.org/blog/2011/…
