Promo Posters for Stockholm Pride

Posted by on Thu, Aug 2, 2012 at 11:01 AM

They're very clever—each poster focuses on one upside of being L, G, B, or T—but someone lurking on Slog who speaks Swedish will have to translate.

More after the jump—along with a bonus celeb sighting...

@1 perfect! Photobombs are the only reason to take photos any more!

Maybe JensR, the Swede who chimed in yesterday to decry the dumbness of Stockholm charging to attend pride, could translate the posters for us.

Or, you know, someone can go transcribe it into google translate.

The first one says, "#24 of the lugs is a need."

Okay, maybe google translate isn't such a good idea. Anyone on Slog know Swedish?

Ah, fuck it. I'm going to keep on going.

"# 10 you will always be a burning issue."

Google Translate + amateur decoding:

24. Because the heels are a must-have.
10. You will always be a hot topic.
21. You can have both -- so fun.
19. For now there are more lips to kiss.
35. Your children will certainly know they were wanted.
2. "The second a wish to obtain lie is not a problem" (? Only one I couldn't really figure out. That's what GT gave me.)

I'm going to guess that "wanted" is a better word than "desired" @ 7.

#2 "getting laid won't be a problem"

haha, #2 is "to get laid isn't problem/doesn't become a problem" ("att ligga" means both "to lie down/to get laid"; I THINK that'a recent development, when I was a teen, you had to say "att ligga med någon (to lie with someone) order for the sex meaning to be more obvious)

Slight adjustment from this Swedish-speaker on the idioms:

24. Because heels are a must-have.
10. You will always be a hot topic.
21. You can have twice as much fun.
19. Because there'll be more lips to kiss.
35. Your children will know with total certainty that they were wanted.
2. You'll have no trouble getting laid.

I'm better with Danish.

# 24 for the heels are a must

# 10 You will always be a burning issue

# 21 you can get double the fun

# 19 Of that it becomes more lips to kiss

# 35 your children will certainly know that they were requested

# 2 To serve will not be a problem

Anyway... Enjoy. I hope you have as much fun as I've had surfing with beautiful Aussies and a charming Swede in NSW. And, have a little aquavit!

Skål!

@19. I think you win the translation contest. Not only have you apparently grasped the intent of the Swedish originals--including the apparently tricky idiom for getting laid--but your English versions (mostly) sound like they were originally written in English by a native speaker of the language, which is always a good sign for a translation.

And yeah, I guess that IS Margaret Cho--thanks #17, I was thrown by her Swedish garb (and her weight-loss--kudos to her for keeping the pounds off) and wasn't quite placing whose famous face that is in the nice photo with Terry and Dan.

My mom is Swedish, but my Swedish isn't very good, so I needed to use Google Translate to help me.

The translations in @19 are pretty much right.

Fairly literally:

#24 Because heels are a must
#10 You will always be a burning question ("hot topic" probably would be better, since we're going for positive connotations)
#21 You can have double the fun
#35 Your children will with all security know that they were desired (better: "Your kids will know for sure that they were wanted")
#2 Getting laid isn't a problem

I second @20's recommendation that you try some akvavit. My parents keep a bottle of O.P. Anderson in the freezer, but I have to say that I liked the Norwegian brand Linie better.

I just noticed that the URL on the posters is blibög.nu which translates as "be gay now." (.nu, from the island of Niue, has long been a popular top level domain in Sweden because it means "now.") There are lots more of these fun graphics up at http://www.xn--blibg-mua.nu/pride/argume…

Unfortunately, I'm not in Stockholm for Pride, but I was visiting in June and these signs were already starting to appear in town.

The last one says "Lying won't be a problem," which I assume is about how faking an orgasm isn't an issue when there's no lady in the room.

My favorite is #26:
http://www.blibög.nu/pride/argument/26
which apparently translates as "Visits to men's rooms become so much nicer." Although for safer sex shouldn't they have shown mutual JO or oral instead of anal?

A bit puzzled that Sweden's pride website is Swedish only. Pride events in Europe are big multi-national multi-day events attracting many straight tourists for the festivities. Swedish people speak English well, English is of course a common 2nd language throughout Europe... And the official Swedish tourism site has info in perfect English on many events -- including Stockholm pride! So why not the pride website itself?

Damn, you guys are handsome. And Terry in that white superhero shirt is just ... phew. Does the man have a year-round tan?

What on earth is Ms Cho wearing, however? Apparently traditional Swedish garb? Love her, but holy shit, that outfit.
Posted by Velvetbabe on August 4, 2012 at 6:55 PM

@33: No, that is not traditional Swedish garb. I have no idea what that woman is wearing.

Here is a picture of the royal family, where the queen and princesses are wearing traditional Swedish garb (the king and prince usually wear a nice suit rather than the traditional west and breeches):

Additional comment to the Swedish translations: "blibög.nu" means more like "gogay.now" (instead of begay.now as translated in the previous comment.)

Thanks for an awesome blog!
