The Women Photographers of This Fall and Winter

  • The indelible images of Shadi Ghadirian, coming to PCNW.
This fall and winter, Photo Center Northwest presents two exhibitions I'm looking forward to: Social Order: Women Photographers from Iran, India, and Afghanistan (October 26 to December 15) and Vivian Maier: Out of the Shadows (February 1 to March 10, 2013).

Maier was a nanny and a nobody until her hidden stash of 100,000 negatives and 3,000 prints—which she'd never shared with anyone—was brought to light in 2008, just a year before she died. Her work became the subject of a documentary film called Finding Vivian Maier, and has had exhibitions in Chicago (review) and New York (review), where she roamed the streets taking her pictures. Her place in the pantheon is still being worked out, and we'll get to consider the question of just what kind of photographer she was. (The Photo Center is reaching out to the Northwest Film Forum to see about bringing the film as well.)

Social Order will feature Shadi Ghadirian, Gazelle Samizay, Annu Palakunnathu Matthew, Manjari Sharma, and Priya Kambli. Samizay, of Afghan descent, is the only artist among five who lives and works in Seattle (a look at a recent exhibition). Tehran-based Ghadirian, the only one living outside the U.S., is an artist I've returned to repeatedly, visiting her web site from time to time just to marvel at images like the one above. She recently had an exhibition at LACMA.

Why say "women photographers." What's so important about them being women? They should be judged on their merits, not their identity. As usual, women require everyone else to bend over backwards to accommodate them. What better proof that women are the weaker sex than that they need to have laws and regulations in place to compete on equal footing?

Hah. Fags. Maybe you women should learn how to work hard, rather than demand we all work hard just to accommodate you?
