The Democratic Party Platform Will Include a Marriage Equality Plank

Posted by on Mon, Jul 30, 2012 at 11:33 AM

It's been rumored for about a week, but now it looks official. This is a big fucking deal:

A Democratic Party source confirmed to The Huffington Post that the party will include a plank supporting marriage equality in its official platform at the upcoming convention.

The news, first reported by the Washington Blade, represents a historic and phenomenal win for LGBT rights groups, which could hardly have envisioned progress being made so quickly on this front.

The Democratic source relayed that officials unanimously agreed at a recent platform drafting committee meeting in Minneapolis to adopt language endorsing same-sex marriage. Several steps must be taken before the language is codified. A full platform committee will consider the draft in a meeting in Detroit in two weeks. It will then go to the convention delegates in Charlotte for final approval. But the deal is more or less final.

The only way this news could be bigger is if Republicans push to include an anti-gay-marriage plank in their platform, making this election an even clearer contrast on a civil rights issue.

We can expect the RepubliKKKans to respond with an equally reasonable total hummuhsekshal extermination plank in their platform.

The dems have the plank... now they just need to make the republicans walk it.

I'm so glad to hear this. The President and the Dems have made a momentous decision. I'm sure we'll be hearing dissections of this move from strategists in the coming weeks, but for now I'm content with knowing that the right thing is being done, regardless of outcome.

green party platform:

2. Social Justice and Equal Opportunity

All persons should have the rights and opportunity to benefit equally from the resources afforded us by society and the environment. We must consciously confront in ourselves, our organizations and society at large, barriers such as racism and class oppression, sexism and homophobia, ageism and disability, which act to deny fair treatment and equal justice under the law.

@8 - Sure. Why not? But that's not the subject under discussion.

#7: Well, looks like people won't have to vote for a losing, pie-in-the-sky candidate in order to support gay rights.

And just to be clear, I'm calling the greens "pie in the sky," not Obama.

Hasn't the Republican Party platform included support for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage for several years now?

@8: Polyamory is not comparable to homosexuality or heterosexuality. Show me people who are ONLY attracted to multiple people, and not to individuals, and I'll change my mind.

@13: [raises hand]. And I'll wager that most people, like me, are attracted to more than one person.

Now you show me somebody who's only attracted to a single person.

@14: But of those multiple people you're attracted to, you'd be attracted to each individually, right?
The point is that polyamory is a lifestyle and homosexuality and heterosexuality and bisexuality and pansexuality are sexual orientations.
