History Photo of the Day: Cal Anderson

This is a photograph of Cal Anderson (right), taken when he was running to represent the 43rd District in the late 1980s. It was taken at Capitol Hill's Lincoln Park, before Anderson won that election (making him the first openly gay person elected to the state legislature), before he was later elected to the state senate, before he passed away, and before that park was renamed Cal Anderson Park:

I'll remember that next time I'm cruising Cal Anderson at 3am looking for young bucks fresh off the Greyhound from Des Moines.

I've passed by the park a lot, but I never knew who Cal Anderson was until I looked him up right now. Damn, he died young. RIP.

That park had not been called Lincoln Park since the 1930's. I'm guessing the photo isn't that old.
The reservoir was Lincoln Reservoir, and the ballfield was Bobby Morris Playfield, but the park was simply known as Historic Lincoln Park once Lincoln Park in West Seattle was given the name.

Great picture of Cal and Ed. That was taken at the Pride Festival which used to be held on the Sunday before the Pride Parade to kick off Gay Pride Week. The location was the Bobby Morris Playfield which was dirt/cinder at the time. Your shoes came away covered in reddish dust after walking around the playfield. Was very thankful when they put down grass on that field the first time they redid the field.
