The Results Are In: The Olympics opening ceremony was a pretty big hit around the world.

Lesbians, Universal Health Care, and Mary Poppins: Just a few of the "weighty issues" the Danny Boyle-created ceremony dealt with in its "unabashedly British" performance.

Romney's "gaffe-strewn London visit": Paul has been tracking it closely, and the Guardian rounds it up.

And One Last Olympics Thing: Michael Phelps barely qualified for tonight's 400 individual medley, securing the very last spot.

Details of the City's Settlement with the Department of Justice: Dominic breaks it down here.

James Holmes Had Been Seeing a Psychiatrist: The suspect in last week's Aurora shooting had been seeking mental help at the University of Colorado, but his behavior didn't sound any alarms that he might be a threat to himself or others.

Facebook Bans Seattle Mom for 7 Days: For a picture she uploaded of one young daughters pretending to breastfeed the other.

South Seattle Pitbull Attack: Two loose pitbulls bit a 3-year-old girl leaving church with her family and knocked down a 74-year-old lady
Thursday night.

J.P. Patches Memorial Set for September: And it will be held at Seattle Center.

"All Over the Road": Where Snohomish Council Chairman Brian Sullivan's car was, according to a concerned police tipper, just prior to Sullivan receiving a DUI Thursday night.

Apple In Private Talks With Twitter: Apple is reportedly considering an investment of hundreds of millions of dollars in Twitter, presumably in an effort to finally make the leap into social media.

Acrobatic Gymnastics isn't an Olympic sport, but it seems like it should be:

"James Holmes Had Been Seeing a Psychiatrist"

Whoops, there goes the left wing talking point about not enough gub'ment shrinks to go around.

The ponderous potted recap of a thousand years of history was a little dull -- I was hoping they'd do the Prufumo scandal, or the Suez crisis, or the Charge of the Light Brigade, or the collapse of the British auto industry, but no. All was redeemed however when they threw the Queen out of a helicopter.

I dearly, dearly love the march of the nations, though, even the "Independent Athletes" -- how can you not love seeing the runner from South Sudan, a country so new and war-torn and impoverished it doesn't even have an Olympic committee yet?

How about a tribute to Neville Chamberlain, called the Dance of Appeasement?

@4 Ah, nothing like simple-minded arm-chair American historians. Yes, yes, let's all laugh w/ our 20/20 hindsight at those silly foreigners.

Good thing they don't have to include the American imbeciles who cheered on the Invasion of Iraq.

But I will. Bailo, your glorious leader of 2000-2008 was an utter idiot. You conservatives need to wake up to the fact that he was an idiot because he was a conservative, not just another conservative idiot.

Well, I looked at the breastfeeding picture, and the first word that passed my lips, instantly, involuntarily: "Christ!"

The Amazing* sgt_doom's official election endorsements:

For governor: Jay Inslee --- this is a no-brainer, even for the present zombie denizens inhabiting this state.

For secretary of state: Kathleen Drew (anyone who votes for Nichols, we will hunt you down and eventually find you....)

For US Senator: Timmy "Doc" Wilson (yes, we realize 12-year-old dweebs keep prattling on about Maria Cantwell's experience, said experience being a 100% pro-war voting record and a 100% anti-American worker voting record)

For Congressional District 7 (Representative): Andrew Hughes

For Superior Court #29: Hong Tran

We are very, very, very pro-Tran, and very, very, very anti-anti-anti-Sean O'Donnell. The last thing you want on a bench is a party machine hack -- when it comes to ethics or the party line, they will always opt for the party line, regardless of the consequences to the majority.

*[sgt_doom was Amazing long before Peter Parker was being fed milk and cookies by his Aunt what's-her-face, so we are now officially taking it back.]

If you're going to play the game, can't you phrase your response in the same form as was already started.

Makes you wonder what they are going to do for the really big birthday in 2066. I mean how do you celebrate 1000 years of living under the Norman Jackboot?

i don't know from most sports and sportscasters, but who ever decided to let bob costas near a microhone for commentary of the opening ceremonies ought to be demoted to desk work sorting and filing.

Neville Chamberlain might not deserve 100% of his bad rap. He probably knew that on land the British at that time would lose badly (as in: army not exist afterward), he signed a treaty hoping it would work or perhaps he thought at least it would buy time and then the U.K. ramped up their military. A lot.

That last bit is important and it didn't wait for Churchill.

When your cards are that bad, walking away and preparing for a rematch isn't an entirely awful move although Churchill disagreed heavily and he should know.

@12 Better than Ryan Seacrest being dubbed over the 7/7remembrance part of their opening ceremonies. Even networks can perpetuate the 'ugly american' trope.

@10 Part complicated, part easily distracted.

@12 Viera and Lauer were no better. Just abysmal, and even more so for its arrogance:
It was never our intent to live stream the Opening Ceremony or Closing Ceremony. They are complex entertainment spectacles that do not translate well online because they require context, which our award-winning production team will provide for the large prime-time audiences that gather together to watch them.
A four year old could tell what was going on. SHUT UP!

Best moment: when Lauer and Viera didn't know who Tim Berners-Lee was: http://ethanklapper.tumblr.com/post/2816…

Maybe they could have taken five seconds to look him on the web. You know, the web -- the thing Tim Berners-Lee created. It's one thing to not know anything about the sports at all; it's quite another to not know ANYTHING ABOUT ANYTHING.

Fucking morons. It was like having John Bailo and Will in Seattle on the desk.

@3 - Given Obama's arrogant treatment of Netanyahu, and then on to Poland given Obama's "polish death camps" gaffe and halting Poland's missile defense project out of deference to Russia (without even bothering to get Moscow's pressure on Iran in return) -- I'd say Mitt is home free for the rest of his trip even if he makes a daily blunderous gaffe.

Days to election: 101

Fnarf is right...Lauer and Viera needed to SHUT THE FUCK UP during the opening ceremony. Especially since they didn't have a fucking clue what they were talking about. And the fact Lauer didn't recognize the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band part of the ceremony (as he points out "much of this only the British will understand") was beyond embarrassing.

I watched a few minutes here and there--maybe about 10 minutes tops, but yeah, the announcers ruined everything. Those at the ceremony watched everything without announcers, after all.

@18, it doesn't really matter how anyone treats Netanyahu; he's popular with no one. Poland isn't exactly a key issue in our election, either. But Romney's idiotic remarks are.

Facebook says it violates the company's community standards, but Ferrari disagrees.

"It's not sexual and they were just pretending," she said. "What's obscene about breastfeeding?"

Oh, I don't know. Maybe you should ask the hundreds of pedophiles wanking off to the pic. Is there no limit to the stupidity of some parents? I wonder - and not that I'm advocating this - if there were an acceptable and reliable test to become a parent, how many people would pass muster?

I've already lost interest in most television because of things like Toddlers & Tiaras. I can't believe our public airways are being used to celebrate (or ogle) stupidity. Now I think I may have to give up most newspapers as well.

@Bauhaus: The stupid is everywhere. KOMO quotes the Facebook policy noting that the picture was blocked because once it is out there on the internet it will be out there forever and can't ever be taken back.
Then KOMO publishes the picture.
