Today's the final day to see Guy Laramee's sculpted books at Foster/White Gallery. Laramee is undoubtedly a fine shaper of books into other things. But I couldn't connect with many of his pieces—except the one pictured above. By containing the landscape within the imperious confines of this gilded, leathery good book (now gutted), it achieves that projection-into-another-world quality of good fantasy. The way it's displayed also adds a dimension: a small light shining directly on its back casts shadows and suggests unseen depths. Even though you can look at it both from the front and from the back, you're still left with the impression of having only keyhole views.
Closeups of the front and back are on the jump.
