Meanwhile in Utopia

Posted by on Fri, Jul 20, 2012 at 8:56 AM

Inhabitat:

This week saw the successful installation of a 100-foot-tall subsea turbine. After it was installed, tests were conducted to generate electricity for the surrounding region. Scottish Power Renewables, which is overseeing the project, said the turbine was performing well and is already powering homes and businesses on the island of Eday. It wasn’t an easy installation, as the 1-megawatt Hammerfest Strom HS1000 turbine was lowered into the sea during a storm, with crews facing hostile waters (see a video of the installation here). However, successful tests will pave the way for future turbines.
The humans of today can't use the future as an excuse. The world we need to live in is already here.

Since you can't use the future as an excuse, does that mean you are going to stop talking about how everyone needs to move into a 100 square foot room when you live in a freestanding home?

Because if I recall, your excuse for that was the future. You were going to start following your ideals in the future, yes? No more excuses Mudede.

Thank you for this good news. I wonder about corrosion and the (scuba?) maintenance regimen and what the local beasties will do with the new structures.

Will we reach the promise foretold in Sealab 2020?

If the challenges with installation, maintenance and corrosion could be overcome, tidal power is probably one of the best sources of energy available.

@6: Ad Hominem is attacking the person for something distanced from the argument at hand.

Charles made an argument here about how the future is not an excuse for anything.

In a post a week or so ago, he said that the future was his excuse for not living up to an ideal he held that other people should live up to.

Pointing out that a person's own arguments are contradictory and hypocritical is not an Ad Hominem attack.

I'm not impressed. I'd rather see solar power. We have destroyed our seas, and there is nothing good about causing more sound pollution under there.
