Bane Is the Bane of Bain

Posted by on Wed, Jul 18, 2012 at 11:33 AM

Back in January, I noted that the main villain of this summer's The Dark Knight Rises is named Bane, which is a homophone for Mitt Romney's former employer, Bain Capital. I predicted this would cause some trouble for Mitt Romney. And here comes the Big Republican Drama Queen, Rush Limbaugh, predicting a liberal conspiracy:

"Do you think that it is accidental that the name of the really vicious fire breathing four eyed whatever it is villain in this movie is named Bain [sic]?"

Never mind that Christopher Nolan started making this movie in 2011, or that Bane was created by a writer who is one of comics' most outspoken conservatives. Let Rushie gasp and clutch his pearls over this, though—it continues to make Republicans look whiny and out-of-touch.

In the meantime, the internet is having a whole lot of fun with this Bain/Bane thing. Slog tipper Joe sent along this incredible photoshop that's making the rounds.

I love that Limbaugh has such contempt for popular culture that despite making a talking point of this, he can't be bothered to learn the name of the film ("The Dark Knight Lights Up, or whatever, what's that? The Dark Knight Rises, Lights Up, same thing.") or the nature of the character he's talking about ("really vicious fire breathing four eyed whatever")

It's in the link, but probably worth highlighting in the post, that the conservative writer who created Bane did so in 1993. In 2011, you could probably still ding Nolan for purposely choosing that name, if you didn't know better.

Bain is also the name of Conrad Bain, a.k.a. ultraliberal Phil Drummond of Diff'rent Strokes -- who lavished millions of his own hard earned private sector money on the disenfranchised.

From wikipedia: "The character's origin was in Batman: Vengeance of Bane #1 (January 1993),"

A 19 YEAR CONSPIRACY FINALLY BEARS FRUIT.

Accidental, no. Coincidental? Yes! Yes, Rush, you oozing, wheezing, intellectually stunting, morally rotting sack of overcooked, rancid lard, I think it was a coincidence.

@4,

Since the Kenyan usurper already went back in time to place his birth announcement in a Hawaiian newspaper and a fake birth certificate in the Hawaii Department of Health's records, surely he also went back in time to slander Rmoney's career.

Is it a liberal conspiracy that Limbaugh was encouraging racist attacks by the Rmoney campaign on Monday? A true piece of shit, did his sponsors return after the Fluke controversy blew over or is that he syndicates his own show that keeps him on the air.

Good thing movies never use dark skinned guys as villians.

Yeah, given that Nolan's Batman is an extraordinarily hamfisted lionization of George W. Bush, I really don't think that bloviating sack of crap really has even the faintest legitimate complaint here.

If anything, I'm rather expecting the movie to depict the valiant struggle of extraordinarily rich douchebag Batt Romney against dark forces who are using Ba(i)ne to take him down in spite of his devotion to justice and liberty.

So basically fuck Christopher Nolan and his goddamn Batman, is what I'm saying. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed The Dark Knight... until I thought about it for a few minutes.

@8,

Not according to this guy: http://twitter.com/stoprush Supposedly most of Limbaugh's advertisers at this point are government ads and PSAs. Only a few high-profile advertisers remain.

Although I'm certainly not going to listen to that bile to find out for sure.

I'm guessing Limbaugh doesn't actually believe that Bane = Bain, he's just getting his base riled up. He's got 3 hours to fill each day, he probably throws a lot at the wall just to see what sticks. This one stuck, as it's all over the blog world today.

Wait, so Rush is just grasping at the thinnest pretext in order to gin up today's manufactured outrage, unconcerned with the fact that a simple trip to Google is all that's required to instantaneously debunk his claims?

It must have been a liberal conspiracy that resulted in Romney working for a company, the name of which is a homophone for a word that means: "1) A cause of great distress or annoyance; or 2) Something, typically poison, that causes death." The name of the character Bane is obviously a result of those definitions, the "coincedence" is that Bain Capital is pronounced the same as a word meaning the source of great distress, annoyance, or death...

Just shows that both Constant and Limbaugh are idiots who like the sound of their own voice. Because, you know, swing voters will base their decision on a homophone, not healthcare, not the economy.

Feels like a fatuous comparison to me. It may feel linguistically satisfying, but if it doesn't illuminate much of anything or grasp an important truth, it just ends up being juvenile. I don't think it'll help communicate to the public what the public needs to know about Romney.
