That GOProud Romney Endorsement Happened Because of Straight People

Posted by on Fri, Jun 22, 2012 at 11:12 AM

So everyone is still talking about Wednesday's GOProud Romney endorsement. (Ahem.) Late last night, the MetroWeekly published an account suggesting that the endorsement almost didn't happen. And if straight people weren't allowed to vote in GOProud endorsement meetings, the endorsement probably wouldn't have happened:

What has not been noted thus far — because the vote was not public beyond a mention that two people voted no — is that only a bare majority of the board's seven members at the time voted for the endorsement. What's more, half of the board's gay or lesbian members voted against endorsing Romney.

Of the seven GOProud board members, only four supported the endorsement. Only two gay or lesbian board members voted in favor: LaSalvia and Bruce Carroll.

The other two gay or lesbian board members voted against the endorsement, and two straight board members voted yes. One straight board member did not vote, LaSalvia tells Metro Weekly.

It really makes you wonder what GOProud board meetings are like, doesn't it? You should go read the whole account, which involves one board member's support for Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson, which I believe is going to become a bigger issue for Romney as the summer drags on.

So, GOProud is a GLSA with a heavy emphasis on S.

3 out of 7 board members are hetero?

Though, I find it a little disingenuous to say if it wasn't for the straights. The gays were half in support and half against.

I'm with @1 on this one: almost half the board members are straight? Heh... Maybe one of the other 4 is bi, making it an even split. I'm sorry. I'm as supportive of gays as I can possibly without, you know, actually having sex with them. But I'd never consider being on the board of a gay organization, any more than I'd join the NAACP. My straight white ass does not belong there. They have to deal with enough people like me in the real world.

Is it just me, or does GOProud have kind of an astroturf front group feel to it?

They've got GOP in the name...did you think they were going to endorse Obama? Who really gives a fuck that a bunch of republicans endorsed another republican?

Yup. I'm with @1. I know that gays are hard to come by, since there's so few of them, but this being a non-straight organization (I mean, do straight people need representatives?), couldn't they go through the trouble of finding non-straight members for all their board positions?

@4 - It was big news when the Log Cabin Republicans declined to endorse Bush in 2004... in fact, I think that's how GOProud was formed, to make sure that Republican Gays always toe the party line.

Perhaps GOProud's endorsement will lead Romney to be more sympathetic to gay rights, should he win the election.
