"We regret the duplication of material."

Posted by on Tue, Jun 19, 2012 at 2:14 PM

Jonah Lehrer just got a prime gig at the New Yorker. He even got his own New Yorker blog about "science, imagination, and the mind!" How's that blog going? I notice that all of the entries on the front page of the blog begin with italicized text. Let's just take a look at those, shall we? Here's all the italicized text on the front page of Lehrer's blog:

Editors’ Note: Portions of this post appeared in similar form in an April, 2011, post by Jonah Lehrer for Wired.com. We regret the duplication of material.

Editors’ Note: The introductory paragraphs of this post appeared in similar form in an October, 2011, column by Jonah Lehrer for the Wall Street Journal. We regret the duplication of material.

Editors’ Note: Portions of this post appeared in similar form in a December, 2009, piece by Jonah Lehrer for Wired magazine. We regret the duplication of material.

Editors’ Note: Portions of this post appeared in similar form in an April, 2010, column by Jonah Lehrer for the Wall Street Journal and in a July, 2009, article for the Guardian, which was an excerpt of Lehrer’s book “How We Decide.” We regret the duplication of material.

Editors’ Note: Portions of this post appeared in similar form in an October, 2011, post by Jonah Lehrer for Wired.com and in an August, 2008, column by Lehrer for the Boston Globe. We regret the duplication of material.

In case you were wondering, that's an editor's note on every single post. While I admire Lehrer's dedication to recycling, I imagine the offices at The New Yorker must be pretty interesting this week.

Ha! Maybe next payday they'll tell him to just reuse the money he got paid the first time he wrote all that.

Hard to imagine.

New Yorker blog

I actually put a comment in on one of his articles:
http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/fr…

But it seemed to go off into the void. First of all it's just a TEXTAREA with a post button. There's no fields for logging in or identifying yourself or just checking Anonymous.

And there was no real acknowlegement...and while I assume that a "New Yorker blog" would be well read, I don't see any list of comments there.

I'm reading his book right now. His book about creativity, innovation, and new ideas.

Something's not right here...

The people responsible for sacking Jonah Lehrer for using duplicative material, while themselves generating duplicative material, have now been sacked.

@6, did you see the Friday Twitter post from Reilly where he was taking credit for picking Tiger Woods to the US open?

Rick Reilly‏@ReillyRick

Write it down. At 2 p.m., PT, Friday, Tiger Woods took the Open lead and never looked back. ... Bet me.

Long ago in a galaxy far away, a web log (or "blog", for short) was simply a log of interesting things one found on the web, and a typical "post" consisted of an excerpt with a link.

I imagine that The New Yorker's regret is not so much an admission of a mistake, but an acknowledgment of their embarrassment at having to resort to this.
