Capitol Hill Temporary Park Strikes Again...Right Now

Clouds and gloom cant stop the fun.

Last month, Christopher Frizzelle reported on the temporary park that Stranger essay contestants and founding members of the Renegade Planning Collective Kirk Hovenkotter and Seth Geiser put together in that teeny strip of street on Summit, at Denny and Olive on Capitol Hill.

Well, they're at it again, and the second iteration of the temporary park is going on right this second. Hovenkotter and Geiser wanted to make this version bigger and better, and have set up a bike rack, tether ball, sack toss, and teeter-totter sofas. And the party won't stop til it gets shut down. So come down and take part in some avant-garde, city planning awesomeness.

6,000 people in Pioneer Square and you post THIS?

Even though the whole #SonicsRally was a huge put-on by Hansen's group, The Stranger loses a lot of credibility for not covering it.

INCREDULOUS HACK OF THE DAY AWARD TO THE WHOLE STRANGER STAFF.

@4, a fart squeezed out at a reception on Capitol Hill with free sandwiches for the Stranger would get covered. Fox News has more balance.

Makes sense since there are no parks on Cap Hill

Oh my gosh how quirky! Someone record it and put it on youtube to the sound of some soulful indie rock hits!

@4 the corporate welfare that is major league sports will happen regardless of how much fellatio the public gives the millionaires and billionaires involved in the process.

The rally doesn't matter. They could have 10 people or 10,000 and we'd still bankroll the wealthiest members of our society while literally taking food from starving children.

It's not newsworthy. It would be news if 6000 people suggested that the rich pay for their own toys.

It was kind of cute how this "park" was full while the real pocket park one block away was completely empty.

I thought "sack toss" (uh huh huh) was called "cornhole" (settle down, Beavis).

Hah! The Wobblies would be jealous of this. We took a rarely used piece of street and put a couch in it and a place to park bikes for a couple hours! Take that, 1%!

@13, hee hee! "Before we hit that unannounced show let's drink a PBR at the ironic flash park Kevin's doing as his masters thesis."

I think what this group is doing is valuable, in that it's a civic announcement of sorts, reminding the people that cities are supposed to be for the people.

If you think it's absurd to try to increase the proportion of outdoor spaces that can be used by people (as opposed to cars), then you really aren't imagining the city as it could be (picnic central)!

As long as the city is giving over most of its outdoor space to roads and carparks, these kinds of actions will remain relevant.

@5, with a face that ugly, i'm guessing that inanimate objects, like an arena, are the only things you get to fuck, so i'll let you do your thing. fuck on, nafun.

A closed off street with couches and bikes?

It's more fun in the winter with the iced hills and roaming gaggles of pbr holding 20 somethings sledding to their doom in/on whatever they can find.

@18, you're kidding me, right? How old are you?

(And bee-tee-dubs, the phrase is "credulous hack," not "incredulous hack." Do it right or don't do it at all.)
