Morning News: Death, Smuggling, Crayons

Posted by on Fri, Jun 8, 2012 at 8:32 AM

Fleetwood Mac's Bob Welch Dead at 65: Of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. Stevie Nicks calls it "devastating"; Mick Fleetwood says "he was a huge part of our history which sometimes gets forgotten."

Bus Explosion in Pakistan: At least 19 people died and 35 were injured in the Peshawar bombing. No one's claiming responsibility, but "suspicion is likely to fall on the Pakistani Taliban."

"The Smell of Death": CBS News correspondent Elizabeth Palmer reports (poetically) on the mass killings in Syria.

Child Smugglers Busted: No, not children who smuggle. People who smuggle children. "Federal investigators have cracked a human trafficking ring thought to have smuggled dozens of illegal immigrants—including children traveling alone—over the Canadian border." There's a SeaTac connection.

Michael Wang Hit-and-Run Case: Finally solved, thanks to tips.

Obama's Attacks on Romney's Bain Capital Days: Work pretty well in the battleground states, according to a recent poll.

Another Reason Jaywalking Is Dangerous: An Edmonds police officer may face criminal charges for allegedly having sex with a woman he'd just arrested after a jaywalking stop. "According to an Everett Police statement, the officer arrested the woman, put her in his patrol car and drove her to a remote location where the two had sex. The woman reported the incident to law enforcement a few days later."

Will Thanksgiving Be Awkward This Year? Rand Paul endorses Mitt Romney.

The #ShellFAIL Hoax at the Space Needle: Eli breaks it down.

Sounds Like the Beginning of a Creepy Movie: Scientists are concerned about organisms on that dock that washed up on the Oregon coast from Japan. "Volunteers [have] removed a ton and a half of material from the dock, and buried it above the high-water line."

Former Soda Shill Repents: Ex–Coke marketing executive Todd Putman speaks at the National Soda Summit in Washington, partially because he "wanted to warn about the industry’s particular focus on young people and minorities."

In honor of this (oh my god, watch it!!!), let's go to the crayon factory:

I'm not the biggest Bob Welch fan in the world, but why, oh why, couldn't this have been Stevie Nicks instead?

Don't need polls to know the Bane attack vector works. Just look at how much whining about how unfair it is that is taking place on the talking head shows & what passes for news on TV. As hard as they are trying to demonize it the approach must work very well.

Fnarf, I posted something to you over on yesterday's liquor thread. Not looking for a response, but I want to be sure you see it.

Former soda shill... echoes big tobacco with their focus on young people and minorities. And so do the health problems. But really, if they would use half the sugar, they'd still be sweet and delicious. They just appear stubborn and destructive.

That's one of my favorite Mr. Rogers bits ever. That and the one where they go to the saxophone factory.

As an old Dodger fan, I think it's weird that Bob Welch and Steve Howe are both guitarists AND pitchers. And then there's Dave Stewart!

"Human trafficking" sounds so much more nefarious than "immigrant smuggling".

Of course, Metro has been operating a huge, well-organized human trafficking ring in plain sight for years.

And in late-breaking news, I'll Have Another was just withdrawn from tomorrow's Belmont Stakes due to a swollen left front tendon. No triple-crown winner this year. Shit.

Does the Stranger get money for these Lazy for Cash ads or are your filters just bad?

Capitol Hill Seattle reported the awful news this morning that the young bicyclist who hit a van at Pike and Boren last week has died. He was the son of the guy who runs the Elysian. So sad. http://www.capitolhillseattle.com/2012/0…

Many ads are generally tailored to the user by the third party ad service and not actually picked by the Stranger's staff.

TRUE CRIME

Long ago, in a country far, far away, in another universe, pre-Obama (or should that be RambObama?) and pre-Bush, the bad guys actually, positively went to frigging jail!

OMG and it's sooo amazing, dood!

For sure and as in GE executives actually went to jail in the early 1960s for price fixing with Westinghouse.

For sure and as in 896 banksters actually went to jail for the S&L meltdown debacle in the early 1990s.

For sure and as in ADM executives actually went to jail for price fixing in the late 1990s.

But that, my children, was a different galaxy in another time.

I like how Mr. Rogers says "crayons" like "crans." I say cray-on.

I miss factories that make stuff.

As you likely know, Fleetwood Mac was in a transition with Jeremy Spencer leaving and if correctly remember Danny
Kirwin being fairly new. Bob Welch, Kirwin and Christine
Mc Vie were was filling a very big hole and taking things in
a completely different direction. I still think "Oh Well" one the best songs FM created....and prior to Bob Welch's entry.

Hmm, who would have thought that if you support terrorists and their organizations abroad, and shelter terrorists in your own land, some may end up killing your own people.

Fuck you Pakistan, I feel bad for the murdered, but you brought this on yourselves. Stop supporting terrorism if you want less terrorism within your borders.

Man, I wish Pakistan was reading this blog, then I would show them.

@17, I don't really care about any of that; I just wish Stevie Nicks was dead. Preferably retroactively, starting on the day before she was first scheduled to sing on a record.

@9, I know you don't like me, but damn, you have brought to my attention something weird and hilarious. Common ground?

@18 I am afraid we can't readily say F/U to Pakistan. I seem to recall they possess a stockpile of an estimated 100+, and increasing, nuclear weapons....and who really knows under what kind of security. A destabilized Pakistan should scare the crap out of everyone, however it's Iran, and its nuclear ambitions that has everyone's attention.

@19 I guess you heard to many Rumours..........

Bob Welch kinda got a raw deal. Was hoping he was happy in the end, but apparently not - and Sentimental Lady is a beautiful song. Will always love the lyrics and Christine McVie's backup.
